N Quote: ow, don't go too far with absolution for small apertures causing issues even with web downsizing. The DLA is calculated based on the Rayleigh limit, ie the first null of the Airy Disk falls on the peak of the next, assuming that the AD's are at the pixel pitch. So, if you adjust aperture down by two stops, your AD pitch is now two pixels. This then allows you to down-size by 2x without losing resolution due to diffraction. So for the 7D (as with the T2i) with DLA~f7 you can stop down to f14. If you downsize 4x, you can stop down to f28. But at that point you have essentially turned your 18MP sensor into a 1.3MP sensor... Say what? So what does it do to a 24mp sensor? Edit The post has just arrived and part of my new toy. A 5*7 sheet of beam splitting glass. On the weekend the next part of the toy arrives a Sigma 105mm Macro lens......I just have to get some perspex to mount the glass correctly then I will have a decent axial lighting set up and a new lens to try it out on.

Quote:I've got the lens hooked up, and the coins out of the safe deposit bank late tonight, too tired to shoot any, will have to wait, I pulled out my "Do not sell box also" SO I might have some interesting things to try, found an old counterfeit gold $5.00 coin, a 15th century shipwreck coin my Dad got me when I first showed an interest in collecting coins. My Grandfathers last silver dollar, and - the coin that started me down the path of coin collecting a counter stamped 1972 Lincoln Cent. Plus I need to catalog about 50 new additions to the 2¢ collection and go through some Large cents I've been sitting on for a while now, plan to be busy all day doing this. Hopefully I will have some decent shots to show. Next on the list for the camera rig will be some sort of microscope stand to hold everything like rmpsrpms and SsuperDdave use. Getting out the tripod is a pain, and not at all comfortable to use, I need something a bit more stable and permanent (and small enough to be tucked away when not using it). I want pictures, I want pictures!

Photos forthcoming, I have shot a bunch, none of the shots are worthy of posting yet, the tripod setup I'm using leaves a lot to be desired for ease of use and comfort. Really need to get a microscope stage base to hold everything on a desk at a comfortable height. I'm finding the focus is very critical, even using liveview feature of the camera (Canon 7D) is helping only to a point.

One coin so far, not even sure what the coin is...   I will say the lens is tack sharp at F/8 lit with two jansjo lamps, coin is raised on a small cork to further blur the background. Canon 7D using liveview to aid in focus through DSLR Remote software on my Macbook Pro. Pentax Auto II belows, not sure of the scale set at. Untouched jpg from the camera, I do shoot in Raw also, with small jpg saved for quick looks. So far so good!  Full size crop since photobucket resizes the jpgs I upload;

Looks great West! The pixel level detail is very sharp, as it should be. Critical focus is more difficult with better lenses and with wider apertures, though f8 should not be too difficult. I find that with the 75ARD1 I look around the coin to see what feature is the most "central" in the DOF, and then critically focus on that feature. For Lincoln Cents, it's Abe's throat that is halfway between the lowest points of the field and highest points of the relief. Ideally, I'd do a 3-stack but I find that a single shot is OK as long as I am super careful with focusing.
Note that I can build you a stand for use with your setup. Several folks use Pentax AB with the small B&L A-Stands and they are a good combo. Email me if you're interested.

Westcoin, does DSLR Pro allow you to show the image on your computer at 100%, as Canon's bespoke software does? Makes it far easier to get a nice sharp focus.

Yes the software I'm using shows a 1:1 ratio with an option to zoom even further into the view. They make the software for Mac and PC, I'm only using the trial version so far, but I really like it and will get a copy soon as funds allow. I only have to deal with the frequent evaluation notice popping up constantly, no watermarks on the photos, it functions as a full version with that exception. You might want to try it out! http://www.breezesys.com/DSLRRemotePro/

Your 7D comes with all the software you'll need; don't bother spending the $100 on DSLR Remote.

Don't like the Canon software. Haven't found it to work very well for me. Can't connect to cameras about half the time. I'll give it another try though, I haven't used it since I had my 1D and 1Ds cameras. (the 1Ds is firewire connection only - no USB). Maybe it's changed enough to be better for me by now. Do also have Helicon Focus that looks like a pretty powerful focus stacking software. I did try some stacks 5 and 7 images deep with the EF100mm Macro F/2.8 lens looked pretty good.

Give it a shot; it's greatly improved. A few years ago, I had failure-to-connects using WinXP, usually related to services which didn't actually restart when I killed and restarted the software or aged drivers. These days - using Win7 64-bit as well as 32-bit OS's - I've had flawless functionality at all times. I swear by Zoom Browser, and it's one of the primary reasons I recommend Canon hardware above all else.

Thanks SsuperDdave I will try it again. That was my issue with it, failuer to connect, and dropping the connection during shoots. I have both Win 7/64 and OSX though I prefer to use OSX.
