Someone gave me a coin that's really puzzling me. It's exactly like an Edward VII gold sovereign (with St. George slaying the dragon on the reverse, and the year 1909), but seems to be Copper or Bronze and about the size of a Sixpence.

I looked in the catalogs for Britain, Australia and Canada already, but can't find a match.

Do you know anything about this coin?

Thanks

It sounds like it might be play money.

Counterfeit half-sovereign with the gold plating gone?
A pattern of some sort? (Although I would expect those to say "model")?
I feel as though I'd encountered a reference to this somewhere...

You could be right; it has a similar size to a half sovereign. Though it seems to well done to be counterfeits.

It also has the top side of the rim smashed, so I'm also thinking it could be a medal of some sort.

I think it could be a half sovereign replica made for jewellery - I've seen them from time to time in dealers' trays. The rim damage would be where a hanging loop has been removed.

I suppose it wouldn't have any value then.
