After looking at the post by thingee and die cracks, is this more trapped gasses on a widerscale, or a different type of alloy/planchet problem?

I believe he's asking about the gas filled one of Lincoln with the line going straight out from his bow tie.

I stand corrected

It looks more like some form of acid corrosion.

I have seen and in fact have many of the 80's Plated Zinc cent that exhibit this characteristic,, it looks like dust or dirt in the plating to me .

in time most of these will corrode and develope craters in the zinc .

I cannot speak with much authority about the cause and posted just what I determined it to be ,, coppercoins may be able to teach us both something when He posts to the question.

it is trapped gas's between the two metals. yours has the (we call it the ) Orange peel look it is a lot of gas trapped and looking for a way out. sad part is by the time it gets out the coin will be a hollow shell but the plus is it will be a copper shell lol

Ok its gas ,,what causes it? ,, I'm still not so sure its not caused from contaminates in the plating ,,unless it is a contaminate on the zinc?

you are correct in both guesses it is contaminates. not sure if it is the metal or plating but after the bubbles show up it really don't much matter

the older coins before 1982 are solid copper not plated at all so there is no zinc in them to corrode
