...I get an alert on my phone that it's at $511.00 Look what it ended at, all taking place in 15 minutes http://www.ebay.com/itm/1787-MASSAC...33852143?ru=http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html%3F_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=121133852143&_rdc=1&nma=true&si=1QDc1dCMxpOwWrf2OBVXW5JbwgE%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 swcoin.ecrater.com

I listed an empty box for a post war Lionel anniversary set years ago that went from around 50 bucks to over 800 in the last 3 minutes.

Unreal...speechless. What should be a nominal price for such a coin?

Looks about right for a Ryder-6A of this quality.

Yeah, the Ryder-6A is one you don't see everyday. That price is not surprising but how fierce the bidding can get last minutes! It's a phenomenal planchet!

It always seems to get that way. A few people put in their top bid with a few minutes after the bidding ends.

A lot of people are trying to not run up the price by bidding early. I really don't think that matters much as most folks will pay what they'll pay. I do know I have not bid on an item because it's early bids were already high knowing it will go higher in the last minute.

Wow .... I suppose I should not be surprised that many folks prefer to wait to the end ... but that nearly 4x increase in the final 15 minutes is a bit astonishing.
BTW ... did you win it?

Looking closely at the bids, seems it actually happened in fifteen seconds To be precise (all times converted to forum default): 19:15:26 - price still around $511; 15 seconds to go 19:15:34 - someone bets $750, price climbs a bit to $610-ish; 7 seconds to go 19:15:35 - someone bets an uncertain high amount, price climbs to $760-ish; 6 seconds to go 19:15:37 - someone bets $1000, doesn't win but price climbs to $1020-ish; 4 seconds to go 19:15:39 - someone bets $2142+, doesn't win either but price climbs to $2167+; 2 seconds to go 19:15:41 - auction ends ...That's sniping for you, I suppose. Also known as why I really don't like ebay auctions.

That's typical ebay sniping. It should be expected as the norm rather than the outlier, if you're offering something truly juicy. I know I haven't placed a bid on an item at ebay with more than ten seconds left for years.

I prefer sniping for the simple reason it gets me out of any bidding war. These days I resent it when someone starts bidding the price up days before the end of the Auction( IMHO early bidding wars are a sign of inexperience)

As a buyer, sniping is great. As a seller, not so, especially since ebay won't let you pull auctions in the last 24 hours. If you have something that just isn't moving, you have to sweat it out until the end. What would be better is if they made it so that the auction didn't end until 5 minutes after the last bid. That would totally kill sniping.

The only time I bid on an auction before the last few seconds is if I'm the first bidder and I place what I call a watch bid, a buck or two.

That explains why I see closed auctions with low bids. It seemed strange that on an item that closed at $500, someone would drop out of the running at $2.

A lot of auctions are beyond what I'm willing to pay even before the "sniping hour" or sometimes something better will come along and I'll just delete the auction from view once I'm outbid.
