At last, I have an equivalent for Metalman's infamous "weakly struck uncirculated" 1888-O Morgan which may be seen at http://www.coincommunity.org/galler...hp?pos=-1154 and which is discussed and debated here: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...888,O,Morgan . That his 88-O Morgan has unique qualities of its own is clear from the images and discussion. I have long since offered to purchase MM's 88-O and to get it slabbed but, alas, I have been rebuffed every time. What's a Morganphile like me to do? Sooooooo.......

...After considerable effort and the graciousness of a dear forum friend who realized my quandary, I have secured an 1888-O Morgan of my own to match Metalman's 88-O Morgan. Mine is clearly also a weak strike but at least I admit it has been circulated a bit and it does show a few circulation marks. I also apologize in advance for the scan which does not show the coin's true luster; my coin photo studio is put away for the summer. Scans considerably reduce luster (cartwheeling). Like Metalman's 88-O, mine also is not for sale.

The grade is open for debate since the New Orleans Mint is notorious for weakly struck Morgans. I may or may not get it slabbed. What do you think?

Fred nice coin !! I will bet that the CC morgans are Green with envy sitting next to that coin ?

My Guess on the grade of your coin is PDS-.000001

By the way you forgot to mention that my coin is more than likely a VAM-14 !!

also the coin weighs 26.733 grams 412.5 grns if that helps you to know that the coin is UNC just like I have always said !!

Metalman

Fred did you really think I would fall for this feeble attempt to shame me into parting with this coin ?

for cryin out loud !!!

THAT

IS

AMAZING

I would love to know the history on this coin like where it's been and what sawmill it has visited.

I'd say AS-0.032 (About Suck)

How much does it weigh in at?

Fred, with all the talk of expanding the Sheldon Scale to 100 points, I will hold my grade opinion until they start the minus 10 scale. By the way, I see a little rub on the Breast Feathers and possibly on the high point of the cheek. Maybe its just cabinet storage rub. Also there may be a fingerprint or two on the obverse and a few minor rim nicks. Mike

a few circulation marks

A used grenade has a few circulation marks. This one's been over the meadows and through the woods, and then Grandma took an axe to it.

Maybe Metalman would consider an even trade for his since this one obviously has a lot more history to it...

MM, I am constantly amazed how much guilt you are carrying around. Did I ever, EVER hint in my original post that you should send your 88-O to me? 1888-O-Morgan-Challenge-For-Metalman

BTW, this 88-O Morgan weighs in at 384.7 grains (24.934 grams) which makes it my lightest authentic Morgan (the runner-up, an AG 79-CC weighs 398.2 grains). This puts it pretty darned close to a counterfeit Morgan I have (380.0 grains) which doesn't have any metal loss. An absolutely drop-dead gorgeous Panda I also have which states ".999 1oz Ag" weighs 343.8 grains (it's likewise a counterfeit).

This 88-O Morgan has not only seen a LOT of history, it IS history. Mere uncirculated Morgans haven't been anywhere, done anything, nor seen anybody; they are just lumps of silver with some lettering stamped on them. 1888-O-Morgan-Challenge-For-Metalman

Thanks all for the chuckles!

Fred
