A newp for your opinion/grade/attribution. Note the reverse clash: I bid it at XF, although it's a little short on luster for the grade.

I'm willing to go XF-40 for what I perceive to be nice crusty, dusky retoning, which brings it up from a VF-38. I like it, have you figured out which of the 49 Overtons of '27 it is yet? Looks like a couple of telling cracks; I'll drag out my book later on if no one else has done it by the time my house is cleaned up.

My gut reaction was VF, but on closer inspection I'm willing to take it into the XF+ range. That's a nice coin with good balance in strike and wear front and back, IMHO! There is plenty of detail in the hair and in the eagle's feathers. Nice even wear. Congratulations.

So that's what an 1827 looks like without digs in it. Good looking coin, but I can't help with an attribution.

Not My strong Suite, A person probably need the Overton book to help grade and Attribute This series. How ever I would Grade it VF It looks like it has some Hairlines from an old Cleaning, Can not see if it is on the Devices as well or if it is in the planchet.
the Zero shows to much wear as well as the rim But a very Nice coin , better than the one I have. I love the clash too!! I didn't break out my book. So lets see how I do.

XF45 (that's a bit on the optimistic side, but I like the originality).

The text is fantastic and holds this coin higher than it's material's current condition. XF-46

Hi Habib, I couldn't find Overton, all I found is "Half Bust Fever" which is useless. Not even sure I have Overton. My oldest daughter collects these and she left home five years ago, maybe she has Overton. Anyway, is your house cleaned up yet? Which is it?

Even if the luster is compromised, I see this coin as a strong XF. I believe the variety is O-129. That would make it Obverse 20-s2 and Reverse W. This variety has a rarity rating of R4.
Thanks for the great pics, Dave! There are an awful lot of varieties for 1827. Your pics were great for narrowing it down.
For those of you who don't have an Overton book, here are the diagnostics for this variety:
Obverse: Stars are close to milling. Date is 8 1/4 mm. All of the stars on the left are usually flat while all of the stars on the right are relatively sharp.
Reverse: 50 C. is 1 1/2 mm large and well centered. A-A is slightly over 1/4 mm. There is a small defect lump near the top of stripe 1 and part of an extra line on the left side of stripe 4 which is 1 mm long. There is a small ridge in the stand of the L in PLURIBUS.
I couldn't tell if the ridge was there, but I'm pretty sure I see both of the reverse die defects in the stripes.

Dave, I concur with a XF-40, but it is close to a VF-30, but I think it makes it. Does look like an old cleaning with a retoning; however, for eye appeal it is perfect! I love it and wish it were mine.

I'm actually glad that you didn't get the time, HABIB. I had terrible insomnia last night and this gave me something fun and interesting to do.

Thanks again, Susan for the attribution. I ordered a copy of Overton & Parsley: EARLY HALF DOLLAR DIE VARIETIES 1794-1836, Fourth Edition, from Charles Davis. Let's see how long media mail takes between two points inside of Massachusetts.
