By using the term 'bags' do they mean that the victims lost 5 bags of $1000 face each of silver coinage? Just trying to understand the terminology.

That's how I read it, unless they put a denomonation on the bag they are assumed to be $1000.00 face of 90% silver coins most likely.

When I went through my expensive burglary, the theives missed several 100 oz. silver bars and a half bag of 90% silver mixed sitting on a bookshelf. They also left all the Stamp albums alone on the same bookcase. Guess they weren't interested in books. Idiots, but still stinks they got what they did.
