Why does grading companies grade coins with such odd numbers.

G-4, G-6 ect makes sense but I purchased a coin NGC graded AU-53

How does one put a value on it?

its a simple sliding scale from 0 to 70. with 70 as best grade, over 59 the coin is a mint state coin

Type in NGC price guide on the web. Then look up your coin, they even have world coins

Tough to put a value on Canadian coins in NGC slabs. They have a reputation for overgrading especially in circulated grades, the coin is almost certainly not AU53 by Canadian standards. You must be able to properly assess the grade for yourself and then determine a value.
The NGC price guide for Canadian coins does not include a full range of grades, though the prices seem to be in line with their optimistic grading.

I would assume that NGC felt that there are enough coins better than AU-50 and worse than AU-55 to make this a point on their scale.

I can justify this on the higher end of the scale (where AU-50 and AU-55 might be worth $500 and $800, respectively) - there is a big enough difference in values, and closing the gap could be worthwhile. However, on the other end of the scale, I fail to see the point of Poor, Fair and AG-3 being three seperate grades (apart from low ball collectors). Grades like F-18, and VF-25 also seem a little pointless to me (there aren't too many coins, apart from old Vickies, where the difference between F-15 and VF-20 is more than a few dollars).

For me, I usually pick one of the common grading numbers, then if it has minor + or - like toning, blemishes, I'll raise or lower it a few points based on that. Maybe they're doing something like that as well?
