Some years back before decimal coins started in AU I collected Shillings and Penny's. I have more than half of a Rennik's album full of coins. I was looking through it and found this One Penny from 1955 with no beads around the rim on ether side. There don't seems to be any marks that it's been scraped of. The first time I thought it was a fake. I like to have your opinion on the coin. Cheers Charles.

Looks to be one of 3 things, pressure test strike ( not enough ) or severely warn die, or oil/grease around the rim when struck.

Is it slightly wider than a normal penny? it looks like it. If it is then it could be a little broadstruck.

Actually now that you've pointed that out Matt, the legends do look to be a long way away from the rim.

Hi enworb. The coin is 30.85mm,normal dia. The edge is 1.89mm, I measured some 6 or 7 others and it varies. The weight is about 13grams (digital kitchen scale).

Well I don't know then.
Does anyone know if Australian pennies were given their rims before being struck? Maybe if this one slipped pass that process then the rim beads would be less likely to be struck up?

I think I remember seeing a halfpenny blank that had a rim but I don't know if it was Australian for sure, or even when it was made.

I'm pretty sure that australian pennies & halves are rimmed before striking,i have both rimmed & unrimmed blank planchets so thats why I figured they are rimmed prior to striking.
