I just got done placing and order for Lincoln memorial cents, Jefferson nickels, regular and State Quarter folder for my kids. I know there going to ask, what are we supposed with these? I 'll tell them to go through all my rolled change and start filling the holes. I know I'll have to give them guidance as far as mintmarks, condition etc. Any thoughts? Oh yeah and if they find a wheat back penny in circulation or a silver dime or quarter then I'll have to go and buy those folders too. Once they have exhausted my rolled change will go to the bank and buy more for them to go through. Think I'll have any luck? I have the patience.

I think that is great but how many kids do you have at age 13?
If you are the dad, then it would be a great experience for the kids. History of the coins. Saving of the coins. And if they don't like the collecting part, maybe they will save them for you or your (their) other siblings to look at before they spend them.

I started my older daughter this way, but it didn't last long at all. She thought I was holding out on her, and almost immediately she wanted eagle holders or airtites for her coins, and then got started collecting what she liked - uncirculated franklins and bust halves.
(I'm impressed, I waited until I was 24 to have kids)

By doing this, you are exposing your kids to coin collecting.
After they spend some time filling the holes, you will know whether or not you have new coin collectors in your household.
Of course some kids might not be interested presently, but could develop an interest later.

My 4 year old step daughter sees me going through coins, reading a coin book, etc. and she always tries to get involved. "Look at this one, Sean" type of thing. It's cute.

Personally, I think you would have more luck with getting them interested in coin collecting if you give them an older coin, like an 1850's large cent since it's probably something that they have never seen before.

It's the time you spend together that will make it enjoyable for the children. This is a hobby they can share with you. The greatest thrill for them is spending time with you doing something that you enjoy.
My kids are grown up, Gee Whiz, I wish I had grandchildren... LOL

I started my 6 year old on Morgans and she has switched to silver eagles on her own. I got the wife going crazy over the panda coins from China, she wants every date they are available in and I find myself sitting in the background while they get what they want now (which is fine with me) but every now and then I will buy a special coin for myself to fill a hole in my Dansco7070 that equals about 10 or 20 of their coins so it all equals out in the end

Thanks for all the encouragement. I changed my birthdate to the correct one LOL. I'm 52 and have 6 and 10 year old.

Great idea. I think the ages are perfect also. I can see the first instinct would be to treat the folders as a puzzle and treasure hunt. Once it starts filling up, I see the immediate thought of finding nicer examples. I think it has a good chance in creating new collectors.
To keep their interest, you can tell them they get to keep/split all silver coins found.....

I think it's important for you to search the rolls with them and then show enthusiasm when they find a coin that fills a gap in the album. I just don' think they'll have entusiasm for this if you don't. In searching thru coin rolls with my 8 year old, I found he has a good eye for coins with color, eye appeal, toning. He likes those more than rare dates. Your kids also might want to start collecting themes that interest them, like animals.
