now I am no newbie or anything but the only reason I am even asking is because the digs are in the fields and not on the devices and I am just unsure of what to call it and have found when in doubt ask someone else their opinion so here goes

I'd say definite post mint damage. Odd type of scratches for mostly in the center. How does the obverse look in comparison?

Bryan. The marks in the field look like a coin that has been cleaned I know sometimes a coin can be cleaned and not show on the devices I could be wrong but I believe this to be post mint damage. Looks like they tried to remove and clean something from just the center of the coin.

here is a picture of the Obverse, I was leaning toward post mint as well but didn't want to replace it if I didn't have to

There are marks a 3-4- and 5 clock however it is a nice looking coin if you were going to upgrade what grade are you thinking of ?

Although still relatively new to the fine details of things like this, common sense tells me that something was stuck to the coin in the middle and the owner tried to carefully remove it with something pretty sharp....

The coin looks like it may have been the subject of a kid and his pencils affection ,, although the pencil color is gone , the drawing remains .

Bryan. The one I have in my 7070 is ex-fine and is problem free, someone else might grade my coin AU big difference in price between ex-fine and AU. Indian Head cents look so much nicer when they are problem free. However like I said you have a nice looking coin .

Difficult to tell from the photo but also could be just a weak strike coin and does have some scratch type looking marks. Just to tuff to tell for sure. If I were you I'd leave well enough alone. Nice coin.

I think tights24 got it right. I have heard and seen coins that have had PVC residue on them and owners used a needle to "carefully" scrap off the PVC. However, usually the "scratches" are very close to or around the devices, but not on/in the fields as with your IHC. At the time of the assault the marks probably went unnoticed, but I suspect that it has been dipped at one time after looking at the obverse, thus revealing the marks. Or a dealer gave it an acetone bath to remove the remaining PVC after the needle work was unsuccessful.

I'd say definitely post mint.

I'll just let it fill the hole until I find another one to take its place sometime in the future. I think I am going to work on the draped bust and classic head again first though

I'd have to say post mint damage also. At least most of the damage is on the reverse. Nice looking coin other than that.
