1872 S Half Dime , Obviously cleaned, I assume a strike through error on the obverse---much of the design is missing, reverse appears normal.

I would say yes due to the lack of damage that I would expect to be on the reverse if it was PMD.

I would agree. It looks to be decently higher grade, at least VF, maybe XF, but I'm not a grader. There is quite a bit of damage from the cleaning though.

I think it was used as a button at one time and the button shank has been removed.

Looks like a strike through error, maybe grease or fabric. Not all that uncommon, but still a neat error.
