Got this one from the local coin show. I always wanted to get this one but was kind of afraid to buy online as this has been counterfeited many times. Examples below from forgery network hows multiple known fakes for Utrecht, Zeeland and west Friesland. However none for Holland which where is this one from I think.

This one is 31.93g (specification is 32.78g)and looks good to me. The lettering on the bottom both obverse and reverse seems to have been cut short, perhaps during the minting. Does anyone knows what method (hammering ?) been used to mint these back then ? Also if you have similar coins perhaps you can share ?

Nice! I'm not able to tell you if it's a forgery but the weight looks right and it has a rough look to it that is appropriate.

I've gotten most of my old Dutch coins from http://rondomons.nl/ Here's a corroded 1711 Utrecht shipwreck rijder. These show up fairly often; probably a lot of the same coin were salvaged.

Practically any European coin of 1780 date (really 1700 onward) is pretty much certain to have been struck with the screw press.

Great coin. It's also on my hit list but as you say - forgeries abound for this type - so it's one I'd be extra careful of.

Hmm...I never looked at the edge...it's plain. The planchet is crudely cut. It's better than a cob, but is wavy, cracked and of uneven thickness. The edging on the 1780 probably reflects improvements in coining technology. I have a couple earlier large pieces, a 1609 leeuwendaalder and an Emden 28 stuivers, and they are even cruder than the rijder.

My kids used to live in western Michigan. Coins with Holland and Zeeland on them were suddenly more interesting. The same with the town names up there. The little town of Drenthe is named for a northern province which appears to have been too poor to issue its own coins.

This is my first Ducaton that was bought in a HK coin show from Baldwin directly. This coin was harshly cleaned by the former owner and I found the surface of both sides porous (plonker, you coin also look porous in the flat field) that scared me for some time. I had mailded this coin to a reputable Austrian ebay seller (worldcointv) for identification. He said the porous surface is part of the design and confirmed it is genuine. Apart for this fault, there is not much telltale of the coin. Please see the pictures and comment.

Specification : 32.32 grams, 42.9mm, S.G10.26, medal alignment.
