Hey guys, I just found a 1892-O Barber quarter in a bank roll of quarters. It's in surprisingly great shape too...lots of detail left.

Thanks! I was pretty happy with the find. It was so dirty I almost didn't check it, but decided to anyway.
Anyone have any idea of grade range on this one? Or are the pics too blurry?

That's remarkable! How on Earth does a century-old silver coin find its way into a modern bank roll?

The photos are too indistinct to be more exact but it looks to be at least a very fine. It's a nice first year issue which a lot of collectors like AND it is a New Orleans Mint piece to boot. Ed ANA LM-3175

Is it real? Maybe someone got a fake and dumped it. I once bought a lot of Standing Liberty quarters on ebay and the 1917 type 1 was dirty and look a little worn but ended up being a fake. I missed it being fake a few times while looking at it.

I was amazed to find it too. I'll try to get some more clear photos. Going by my Red Book, it appears to be either a VF-20 or or EF-40 but I'm definitely no expert...

Great find! It would likely get a "details" grade due to corrosion and scratches/damage.

Looks to be at least upper VF details but yeah, that corrosion is pretty severe.

Thanks guys. I'll try to get some better pics.
Quick question. I know cleaning coins is bad...but what about just wiping them with a damp soft cloth to get surface grime off? Is that ok? This coin has some heavy gunk stuck to it and was wondering a safe way to get it off...or should I just leave it?

This coin has some heavy gunk stuck to it and was wondering a safe way to get it off...or should I just leave it? The consideration here is whether or not any kind of conservation will avoid destroying whatever value the coin has. As bad as this one is, I don't really think it matters one way or another. But consider: the surfaces underneath the worst of whatever's on there will have aged less than the more exposed surfaces; whatever you remove will therefore appear "newer" underneath and make what you've done obvious. Get a shot glass and soak the coin in water in it for a few hours. Then freeze and thaw it. Repeat this cycle a few times; anything the water can soak into will be removed by the process without you ever physically touching the coin. If this does not help, research the use of acetone on this forum - we discuss it frequently - and give it a shot. Anything those two processes don't remove should probably stay on the coin.
