Im happy about this - bid on quite a few things this guy had, won 4. I got this, a crown jetton, a very worn lion jetton and a French Indo-China silver 10c.

So here it is - Augustus in a radiate crown, legend:

C CAESAR DIVI AVGVSTVS IMP H
INSIGNIA CIVITAS ROM

This is one of the coolest things in my collection - a 'fake' roman coin from the 1600s!

I see that you are finding some 'deals' in the summer drought months. Interesting trinket ! I spent 3 days searching the world for something to spend my $10 credit on before it expires Aug 1. I think I finally found something of note ...... but time will tell if the price takes off in the next 5 days.

hu...that's interesting, don't think I've seen anything like that before. the reverse certainly looks like a coin from the 1600's, so doesn't look like they were really trying to fool anyone....what was it for?

I think its something for the more educated amongst the people - clearly made to seem like a real roman coin, perhaps as a souvenier.

Its labelled as a jetton, which makes it a counter.

Don't forget, in the 1600s, there were no such things as Roman coin catalogues, or any other coin catalogues for that matter. Becker replicas from a hundred years later don't look particularly convincing to modern-day ancients collectors either, because we've all seen books and catalogues of ancient Roman coins so know what the "real thing" looks like. Most of Becker's customers did not have such knowledge. We also have much more general knowledge about ancient times - for example, we know the ancient Romans did not have shields and crowns that looked like that, but a minor aristocrat in the 1600s would not.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
