Bought this one a few days ago. Already have a couple 1828's, but when they look this original, I can't resist. Didn't have an O-110 either. Grade?

Nice pick up and an opportunity for me to ask a rookie question and to learn something. When I see the color differences on this coin I (incorrectly) think that it was wiped or cleaned in some way. Can someone explain how you identify this as original?

cipster, determining whether or not a coin is original or not has a lot to do with seeing thousands of coins both original and cleaned. You get to the point you can spot cleaned, dipped, wiped, retoned, whizzed coins almost from a distance. Some are tricky to spot. Some are not. If you'll notice, the lighter areas are all the highest points on the coin. These areas rubbed on other coins/surfaces the most. This rubbing changed the texture of the silver and causes it to tone differently. Also, darker toning is older (if natural). These lighter areas simply have some of the toning worn away. The thicker the silver sulfide, the darker it appears. So, the protected fields and lower areas are darker because they are.... protected. Not all will have the light/dark contrast. I personally like it when they do. A coin 150 years old in circulated condition (G through EF will rarely be light in color. If it is, be suspicious and examine closer. I only collect similarly toned coins so my collection is somewhat uniform looking. I hope I answered your question?!

I do that also Joe2007...many coins grade different on both sides. I usually average them if they are more than 5 points apart, otherwise, I normally go with the lower of the two

Very nice coin. I'd say VF-35 to EF-40. That may be a little much, but it really has some eye appeal that's attractive.
