Alrighty, after my last debacle of a buy, I did a little more research and decided to wade back into the pond. I think my eyes can now detect a dipped/cleaned coin, and to my eyes, (fingers crossed) this one does not appear to be so. Be gentle.... 1888 Its got a little toning going on around the edge or the reverse.

I'm going to say 58 due to what looks like rub above the ear, on the cheek and on the breast of the eagle. Still, a very nice, PQ slider.

Thanks for the replies! My main concern is being able to spot dipped/cleaned coins and it appears that I was successful in that aspect. Baby steps...

looks original as others have stated. I think it is in the AU-58/low end MS range. nice pick up. use that one as your guide, after awhile it will be like second nature spotting dipped/cleaned Morgans.

Are these photos taken by you or are they the seller's photos?

Nice job on the pics....my first impression was a little wear on the cap and above the ear and breast...AU58. Good one

I don't think there is any wear on the high points.
My reason for saying this is due to the fact that the fields show so little damage, and that it is not consistent with the extent of the observed flat spotting on the high points. This leads me to the conclusion that the flat spotted high points are not fully struck up. There seems to be lustre on the breast feathers. The lustre would not be there if wearing had taken place.
I see that there is a small rim ding above the 'E.P' on the obverse. With the bruise in this position, it follows that the edge milling should also exhibit some damage at this point.
A few obvious scuffs to be seen on the obv.
I reason that it has be be an MS grade. I think 62 or 3.

Subjective grading at its finest :) I agree that the coin is high AU/low MS.

I agree - not cleaned or over dipped. A coin like this can be dipped and not show any signs of a dip. It's the over dipped coins one needs to be wary of they loose there luster and look positively dull overall.

Nice, original Mint State Morgan. I only have it at 63 because of the large contusions in front of the nose; but for them (and I realize they're far less important to the eye than to a digital camera), this one's a solid 64.

I'm saying MS61 after averaging a 58/60 obverse and a 63 reverse.
