Since I can't figure out how to order a Breen's Encyclopedia without my wife finding out, I'm going to have to post another one.

1853-Large-Cent---Dbl-Die-Date?

Is this a date doubled? I don't think it is, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I'm noticing that to the south-west, the bottom serif repeats the number's outline. The same effect is happening directly under the middle serif. I could explain it as the '3' is rotated around the axis of the top serif.

Also, is this variation rare? I have several 1853 coins, but none has the top of the '5' touching the hair.

Hi Vaslin

Sorry for the delay in posting to this topic !!

the date on your coin seems to shifted quite far to the left as Iam looking at the screen .

There are several varieties listed for the date ,, none of which match your coin ,, there is however a note indicating that there are no less than 40 varieties from 37 obverse dies and 42 reverse dies ,, several of them showing traces of repunching on the date .

yours maybe one of the other varieties mentioned,, I have to admit Iam not as familiar with the large cents as some of the others folks here ,, perhaps someone can shed some light on this coin and teach us both something !!

by the way your public library may have a copy of the Breens encyclopedia ,,its worth a try !!
