Here's a cool variety which apparently doesn't command a premium price, at least not in circulated grades. It's an 1881 half eagle with a repunched date. It's attributed as Breen variety 6714 and is slabbed by ANACS as AU-53. Long Island Rare Coins sold it to me for what I thought was a very reasonable price of $225. Remnants of a misplaced "81" are clearly visible under the primary date.

Most of the gold die varieties usually sell for not much more than their base value because collectors by variety are so few and far between. I like them, just cannot afford gold.

Your point is well taken, Coppercoins. I'm looking at the latest Coin Market price guide from Numismatic News. The 1851/81 Large Cent variety lists for about triple the price of the regular 1851. It's price in AU is shown as $350, which would buy this gold piece with enough left over to get a regular 1851 cent in AU! Obviously large cent collectors are willing to pay large premiums for the specialty items. The gold varieties look like relative bargains, IMO.

I have owned several with very prominent re-punched dates. I thought I struck it rich the first time I found one, but even a common date PCGS MS63 had a small audience willing to pay much of a premium for it. I sold it a few years ago for about $25.00 more than a regular punched date. I do find them to be very cool though! Nice find and keep your eyes peeled!! Mike
