I would grade the 51 VF35. its was lightly cleaned many years ago and is a good buy at the price you paid.
the 49 I grade EF40, it was also lightly cleaned a long time ago and another great buy at the price

Panzaldi, what are you seeing that makes you think these coins have been cleaned? To my eye, they look original, and I would like to correct my eye if it is wrong! I'm not challenging your opinion, just asking what you are picking up on.

Halo's around all of the devices...stars...bust...letters. this is more prevalent on the 49 that the 51 but both display the same characteristics. this is a tell-tale sign that the coin was rubbed with something. a lot of the time with a cloth with some type of cleaning solvent. the cloth cannot get into those small device areas and you get the halo effect. the reason I say this was a long time ago is that the surfaces have darkened a over the years and recolored. I'm not an expert on cleaning so maybe we can get a couple other comments on their thoughts. maybe I'm way off on this but when I look at a coin to tell if has been cleaned, this is the first thing I look for.

I do notice some crud in the devices and around the stars. Most coins seem to have this. Not sure if dipping them in some acetone would clean up some of this or not. Coins look original to me. If lightly cleaned it was a long time ago I think also.

I wouldn't mess with them; either way they were an excellent buy and market-acceptable just as they are. This look is pretty common with Large Cents of the period; although I tend to agree with panzaldi on the appearance and reasons it would indicate a cleaning, I'm unsure how it applies to this specific issue since the look is so common. Given they're Cents, they've had a lot of handling from a large number of different holders - been in many pockets, including those of hard laborers - and maybe been exposed to both more dirt and more rubbing around than larger denominations. A penny went a lot farther then. And don't forget, these are large coins, bigger than a Quarter and almost as large as a Half, with big fields and big spaces around the devices for the pads of fingers to reach. Further, if we assign a "long time ago" to the possible cleaning - I would - one has to consider that they would have been thought the least-collectible coins in a contemporary sense.
In my gut, I have to think that they're all-natural.

You did just fine. I will add this. I have handled many old copper coins (my area of interest). Old copper coins can be many different shades of brown, reddish, tan to name a few. Your coins appear to have changed to a more crimson/brown which I've seen many times before on Braided Hair LC's. They appear original.

I would grade the 1849 VF25, and the 1851 VF20. The 1851 has a hairline scratch above '1' and a ding on the reverse under the 'N' in ONE. The 1849, seems to be solid with a few bumps here and there. Personally I think the 1849 doesn't look improperly cleaned, but I suspect the 1851 might have been.
