Hey everyone just found the following coin in a dealers stock and am very interested in it. It is a bit more expensive than the other one I was considering but the quality in my eye is significantly greater and definitely worth it. But I would just like some third party grades and opinions. What would you grade it? Is it cleaned? What is your view on it? Thanks in advance Edited by oh my florin 07/28/2013 07:30 am

Looks like a nice EF to me. Could be better if there is lustre?

looks to me like a nice EF coin that has been dipped The overall look of this coin is far too clean for a circulated coin, Why on earth do people have to "Shine up" coins to try and make them look better

I went and saw someone I do business with occasionally today as he called me and told me he had some nice 1938 crowns and some centenary florins. Knowing this fella isn't crash hot on grading or telling if a coin is genuine I went expecting to see some fake coins. To my suprise they were genuine but on the flip side had all been dipped. Very little wear on any of the coins but someone had decided to kill them completely. Dull and lifeless they were. Sel has said it in just about every grading thread you have posted "dont buy an expensive coin from photos alone".

Thanks enworb and I have taken your advice for my transactions a lot the only thing is I gather an opinion of it from photos and if it is good I will then go to see it in hand or purchase it with a guarantee so I can make sure I am happy with the coin and if not I can return it. On another note thanks trout and enworb for the advice on the coin but I am not totally convinced yet with it being dipped due to the what appears to be cartwheel lustre evident in the first picture from at 4 and 10 o'clock? sorry for being a pain guys just need a bit of knowledge on picking out the cleaned coins from the ones that aren't.

From the photos IMO it hasnt been dipped but its pretty hard to tell.
Sometimes coins that have been dipped will still show some cartwheel, depends on how harsh the bath was.

It's been dipped - wear without discolouration is a fairly conclusive indication of a past dip.

Lucky I collect copper. Much easier to tell if its been cleaned from a photo.

Your coin has been dipped, look at the dulling/grey near the rim (a lot of examples have been so don't be too concerned, at least no one took a wire brush to it) but a coin graded EF/maybe aUNC on the obverse of this age must have some sort of tone, it's basically impossible not to. Go through your change at home, look at any coins from the 1960's and 70's and see if any of them look nice any shiny and you'll most likely see they are grimy/dirty (the modern day equivalent of toning as current coins obviously aren't 92.5% silver). The below is a coin which has barely ever been touched let alone seen heavy circulation and you can see the light natural tone on it, hope wwwww doesn't mind the use of the image. http://images.numismatics.com.au/jp...er/r2830.jpg
