I was given a 'golden' opportunity to learn a bit about your country currency yesterday ...

My local USA bank had two Australian dollars in the reject bin of it's coin counting machine ... which I of course accepted gratis with a sincere interest to attempt some knowledge of your coins through personal research.

Apologize if I have all the following wrong ... corrections gladly accepted.

1995 Mob of Roos Dollar

Aussie-Dollars-Found-In-The-USA

In the USA I would grade this coin at VF25/VF30 (Sheldon). Have read enough of your Aussie standards to realize that is not consistent with your grades.

This coin is horribly beat up on the surfaces with bag hits everywhere ... weight is 9.02 grams.

I was surprised to examine the coin edge ... impressed with the 7 flats mixed evenly amongst the reeded edge. Nice touch by the Aussie Mint.

My limited research tells me there were 23 total variety/mm to collect of your 1995 dollar ... geepers!

Alloy is what you call AL-BR ... 92% copper, 6% aluminum and 2% nickel.

Mintage of 5,792,000 ... the 'fun fact' that I believe I found is that the 1995 Mob of Roos was actually a mistake ... the initial release was not intended and subsequent strikes were released to avoid an embarrassing moment at the Aussie Mint.

2001 Centenary of the Federation

In the USA I would grade this coin high AU ... perhaps AU55 (Sheldon) .. in hand it is much cleaner than my poor photos show.

Same comments as your 1995 dollar mentioned above ... reeded edge with 7 flats ... AL-BR alloy ... weight is 8.97 grams.

Believe I learned there were 14 total 2001 Aussie Dollars by date/mm ... wow! Mintage of this example was 27.9 million.

Fascinated by the Aussie 'medal orientation' for your coins ... was a bit surprised to discover this 2001 Dollar has approximately 10 degrees die rotation ...

A bit more research revealed that it is not uncommon for this coin to exhibit a die rotation ... fun that I found it here in the USA.

Close with this ... as am amateur numismatist I truly enjoyed my first in-hand look at your currency ...

Hoping I did not get it all wrong.

David

It is called "interrupted milling". It is a design feature commonly seen on high-denomination coins, and helps the visually impaired tell the coins apart from lower denomination coins of similar size (such as the Australian 10 cents). It can also be seen on the Canadian "toonie" and on 1 euro coins. The Australian $2 coin also has interrupted milling of a sort, though in that case it features four small squares of milling separated by wide bands of plain edge.

Not sure where you're getting that information. There were only two designs of aluminium-bronze dollar issued in 1995, and only the mob'o'roos (KM# 84) was intended for circulation. The other design issued that year was the "Banjo Patterson" dollar (KM# 269), which was released only through the "mint your own coin" machine as it travelled around the country to various shows etc. - there are four mintmarks of this coin (Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane). While they can be found in circulation, they were sold at a premium (I think they cost $2 at issue back then) so most remain in collector hands.

The only other dollar coins issued that year were the two rival silver ounce bullion coins, the RAM "skippy" (KM# 293) and the Perth Kookaburra (KM# 260 and 289).

Your count is incorrect if your interest is only in issued-for-circulation types. There were two designs issued into circulation: the Centenary of Federation which you have (KM# 543), and the International Year of Volunteers (KM# 682). There were three designs issued for collectors-only: Centenary of the Army (KM# 530), 90th anniv. of the Navy (KM# 588) and 80th anniv. of the Air Force (KM# 531); I believe each of these come in several mintmark variations, though by this time the "mintmarks" don't actually mean they were struck in different cities, only that they were intended to be released and sold there.

I think your 1995 information is actually for the 2005 dollar.
You did well to find the 2001 in the condition you did - most dollars that old look like the 1995.

I agree with Mr T. You have got the 2005 stats mixed up with 1995.

Many Thanks for correcting my mistakes in trying to understand these coins ... my apology indeed for the research errors.

That said ... thrilled that a USA collector has the opportunity to examine in hand your fabulous coinage.
