Hi All,

I have been buying very worn down Washington, Roosevelt and Mercury silver coins below melt value from auctions where the description says on most that the seller picks the date.

Now I am purchasing these as bullion investments but just realized what if I get a date where the numismatic value supersedes the melt value.

So please help me by listing the important / key dates for these 3 type of coins so I don't just put them in plastic tubes to store away.

Thank you so much for all your help.

John

Hello, John!

Here's a good site that can provide you with the information you seek:

numismedia

Any "key dates" will have much higher prices in G-VG than everything else.

If the seller is picking the date, the reason should be obvious....

It may also be worthwhile to buy a Red Book. One a few years old would work for you. It lists all coins in a series and will quickly show you which years and mint marks are considered key. A used one from a few years ago should only set you back a couple of bucks.

The chances of getting a key date are very slim as the seller is picking out the dates. However, it IS worth going through your stack and searching. You never know :)

@barryg, thanks for the website. I will check on the coins there.

These sellers I'm dealing with are novelty sellers so in case I get one who is just dumping them for the silver I just might land a worth while date. Most likely I will get common dates but its the silver I'm after and like said you never know.

I have to admit though I am having a hard time putting the worn down Merc's in a plastic tube. I love this coin and keep putting them in flips.

I love mercuries. I put all of mine in 2x2's.
But I don't have very many so it doesn't take up too much space.

When silver was much lower I bought coins as bullion and several were better.

Same here. The design is nice, but I have so few of them there is no point in making an album out of them. Maybe once I complete my IHC, BU Roosevelt dime, modern commemorative half dollar and Shield/Liberty/Buffalo nickel sets, I will focus on these. So many projects...

I remember as a kid getting Mercs in change and thinking how special they were. But as a kid they weren't near as special as that ice cold R/C Cola I would trade them for. If we only knew back then...................
