I only picked this up because it's a 19th century coin in reasonable condition - and I'll keep it as an example of a type. Not silver so it was only £2 - but quite a nice coin. My photography is rubbish though. [/URL]

An incredible buy for 2 Pounds! And not a bad looking coin either! Low-XF(40) based upon the wear on the III and the hair of LIBERTY.

Thanks - it's much "brighter" in hand - not sure why the photo makes it look so dull and green.
I always find it amazing that you can obtain a great looking link to history (not just the US but all coinage) for so little. I believe this was minted round about just as the US civil war was ending so that's a great link to a historical moment.

Lincoln was assassinated in April of that year; wonder if this was minted before or after? Also, this series is notorious for die clashes; take a close look at the fields and see what you can see!

Why does the reverse look like it is struck incuse? Is that how these coins look struck inward like that or is it the picture?

Nice find, I too will agree with the EF-40 grade.

@tomtom777: The reverse looks incuse because, unlike the obverse pic, the light is from the bottom, not the top!

I see now, the light is at a very strange angle giving that illusion, thanks philadelphian.

Yes - the reverse was photographed "upside down" - I didn't realise until I was merging the photos - looks like I didn't get away with it :)
I don;t see any signs of a die clash - and £2 = $3 - so inflation of 100%
