Hi, I just bought this flying eagle off of ebay. I'm a large cent collector but have recently decided to get a few flying eagles. I felt for sure this was a lacquered cent and planned on getting it off with acetone. But, now looking at it I feel like it might be a counterfeit. I'm still waiting for it in the mail but thought I could get your opinions of the pictures from the auction. Notice on the reverse that the wheat stalk is broken.

I see nothing wrong with this one, other than the stalk you were talking about. I just recently purchased the same 1857 and looks very similar.
Rest in Peace

I don't have much experience with these but the reverse looks more worn than the obverse.

It is puzzling.

The tail feather directly above the claws looks wrong and maybe the head is too flat....on the reverse the leaf or whatever at about 830 looks wrong.

I'm not really sure though. Mine are really worn out by comparison so maybe those little anomalies are normal.

Not my collecting area but I don't see any glaring red flags. Weakly struck on the obverse and a little bit off center

Well it has a broken wingtip which is good but I'm betting it was cleaned and he had to re-color it. See the scratch just above his head ? That's the color it should be. I think when he colored it that he left his print while doing it. I'm curious, did you scratch the obverse taking it out of the 2x2 ? I did that one time to a nice coin and now you would think I'm working on a bomb I'm so careful trying to get them out lol. Now this is just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt. It's a beautiful coin anyway you look at it.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Raymo, the pictures are from the auction, I haven't received it yet. Although, your idea about the scratch make perfect sense. I'll have to take some better macro shots when it comes in.

I know this is a very old thread, but I would like to point out (for future readers) that this coin is indeed fake as the O.P. suspected. The broken wheat stalk is a dead give away for this Chinese fake.

Looking at the devices, it is way too mushy for a normal coin (especially the reverse).

Fake all the way imo
