This low mintage and frequent release strategy that the RCM has adopted as of late really is a double edged sword. Yes, demand on a per-design basis is high as is interest, but it seems to be all the expense of the one thing that separates the RCM from others, Quality. The quality of the strike and purity of the metals had been slipping a lot already in the recent years. The degradation of frosting, die cracks on commemorative coins, and the seemingly un-fixable and unsightly white marks on pure silver coins are all painful example. But what is really irksome is the coin designs themselves. This new found need to release dozens of new coins every month seems to have the RCM grasping at straws for ideas. What was before series with continuity and uniqueness is replaced by uneven mintage and inconsistent metal content (think lunar lotus), willy-nilly permutations of the same design at different weights (think o-canada series), multiple issues of what was annual issues (think platinum 1oz and 5oz silver)... And this latest August release... Why do a kilo lunar horse with a different design than the lotus lunar ones when the snake and dragon kilos stayed? Why again recycle platinum 1oz double eagle design as a second coin in the bald eagle series (so this is not a portrait of power series any more?), Why now use a full coloured background for the birds of canada series when no others were done this way? Why does the second canopy coin, perhaps the most promising season for spectacular colours on a maple tree, done with just 2 leafs below an EMPTY canopy. Why!! If the RCM has tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend on hiring designers to redesign their already loved, regal, and working logo into a jumble of in-congruent circles, PLEASE spend more money on the design of the coins themselves and stop taking suggestions from dealers that like to prance around on the shopping network.

The Korean Armistace silver dollar is amazing. And before that the Seven Years War was spectacular. Quote:

Not sure what you're talking about there. Fine silver dollars are a rather recent concept. So, for collectors of that classic series, the quality and purity have been going up.

the striking has been excellent, the themes have been lacking.

The frosting on modern RCM coins is disgustingly cheap, despite higher prices. And they BRAG about it!

Personally, I hate seeing all these new releases. I like the latest bald eagle. The maple canopy is somewhat disappointing.

i grabbed maple #2 because I have #1 and the contemporary art coin because it's beautiful. I love these coins with no borders. trivia: one of my favorite all time coins is the very simple Buffalo nickel because that buffalo is HUGE on the face of that coin.

Only thing I will be buying it appears in 2 canopy coins to go with the first 2 that I bought. I like the leafs but the tree is ok ish maybe better in hand , hopefully.

In all fairness it's not easy coming up with new ideas to get people interested in everything all the time. They've been doing it for a while so not all new ideas are going to be a hit. I think the issue poboxw brought up with the constant releases are true. They are trying to come up with too many new things at once. But at the same time they are only trying to keep up with demand. It's only recently that coins have not been selling out and its going to take time for the RCM to readjust their game plan.

I'd add the $100 specimen set to that list. I'm mad that they apparently discontinued the $100 proof set that they started last year in favour of this specimen set. There's no consistency. And now you can't get a plain silver dollar in a proof set. You have to buy the silver dollar separately.

You really notice the cheap technique when comparing RCM coins to Perth, RAM, and even Franklin proof frosting.
