Here is a circulated 1996 S quarter we found. There looks like doubled lettering, on the mintmark and LIBERTY especially. Some of the image has an doubled effect. Any opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You know, we're looking at this coin right now and those pictures don't do it justice. We'll get some more up soon showing the doubling on the date and Liberty.

Here we go.....

How is this type of doubling different than the others? This is the second response I've gotten on Machine Doubling. How do you tell?

This type of doubling is caused by the die/die's
moving or bouncing slightly when the coin (planchet)
is struck. Or even movement of the planchet itself. There are many types of Machine Doubling.
On a true doubled die the doubling is actually on the die/die's or hub. Search around on here for pics./info etc.
that show and explain how each type of doubling is or occurs.
It takes a while for one to spot the difference but when you learn the coining process itslef very well, it is easier to spot the differences.

Indian has it right. I will add that Machine Doubling reduces the size of devices (damaging) where on a doubled die the devices are enlarged.

Machine Doubling can be seen on doubled dies as well:

Coop

Had a thought. When it rains it pours
Wonder if any of the coins that were attributed
as tripled are actually DDO / DDR's etc. along with MD ?
Looking at that 69-S made me wonder.

One pointer to help differentiate Machine Doubling such as you have on your coin and real double die is split serifs. There are a number of great site with photos of the various kinds of doubling.

If you're really going to get into these kinds of varieties you should look into getting a hold of any edition of "The CherryPickers Guide" or if there is a particular series of coins there are Error and Variety guides for most and they all have sections with pictures of the different kinds of doubling with information as to what to look for.

Some go into great detail of the minting process which help you know what you're looking at. That way you can tell the difference between Machine Doubling and Die Deterioration Doubling, neither of which are true "double dies" as those are created when the die has been altered.
