Here is another recent pick up. I got this from the same place as my 1887-CC Morgan dollar. Thoughts and opinions welcomed. Sorry for the bad pictures and this coin is not magnetic and has a reeded edge.

Is there a known DDO for this coin? This one appears to be looking at Liberty's head. I would agree on G-6 details.

I agree with the above. There also appears to be doubling on the stars from 9- 11 oclock.

I bought it because I was told it was counterfeit and it only cost $3.00. I tried the tissue test and it failed, I don't have a scale so I can't weight it. I also tried the drop test but it was hard to tell.

Just went to a friends because he has a scale and weighs in at 9.6 grams. Don't know what the composition could be though.

Interesting. Looks to be a fairly crudely made counterfeit in my opinion.

Are you working on a Black Cabinet of your own, PocketChangeJunk? I wouldn't mind having a couple of counterfeits myself. They are instructive and they are also simply neat pieces of history.

I found a coin dealer in my area who has a bunch for sale. The best one is 1965 quarter, they all range from $2 to $10 each. I bought three total (2-1887CC Morgan's and the 1853 half dollar.) The 1887-CC are identical. I am gonna buy some more just to have and maybe pass some on to people such as SteveCaruso. I know there wrong but they do make for a good educational tool. I was thinking of putting together a type set album of counterfeit coins since I have an extra 7070 album.

The coin is a counterfeit. The color is a dead giveaway, silver coins of tha time period don't have the color of lead. It probably is not lead but an alloy which makes it appear so. Ed ANA LM-3175

Quote: I was told it was counterfeit That makes much more sense now. When I first looked at it, something just seemed a bit off. The wear pattern on this coin didn't quite look like other worn Seated half dollars that I have seen but if you had not said anything, I don't think I would have called it a counterfeit since I didn't think I had enough evidence to support that conclusion. Well, I learned something today.

(again, lol) thanks for the lesson.. Something looked odd but not odd enough to outright call it a fake. It's definitely not as crude as many fakes. Cool pickups! My LCS has some colonial counterfeits for sale, but surprisingly even though there listed as fake there still quite pricy! Like into three digits.. I wouldn't mind having a few just because... And as reference/learning pieces but for that price I haven't pulled the trigger on any..

A good amount of colonial coins are counterfeit because the US Government wasn't in a position to provide all the coins needed for the newly established country.
