You're likely missing a little of the diameter inside the slab. Ssssssh. You just got a Morgan (probably cleaned, but still) for less than $12.50.

SsuperDdave, you think it's real? I've some free grading certificates for ANACS, maybe I'll send it off and see? They'll certainly measure and weight it before grading, right?

I wouldn't recommend sending it. No way it makes the grade, and you can assume it's been cleaned. However, it's quite likely that it's real; these scammers usually slab problem coins at inflated grades rather than fakes. Can't say for sure without the coin in hand, but in your shoes I'd assume that I just got paid $15 to take it off his hands.

I want to make sure I understand how you're coaching me. Are you saying that ANACS would refuse to grade it or that it would receive a poor grade? I'm think since I've got several free gradings, I'm not out anything and if I don't like the results, I can crack it out of the slab.

Quote: Are you saying that ANACS would refuse to grade it or that it would receive a poor grade If its been cleaned itll get a details grade which really adds no value and in the case of common morgans would lower the value with the stigma of the problem grading. If youre sending other coins in and want to use your last free grading on it I dont see a problem with that, I just wouldnt pay to send it in since that fee will erode any savings you had from the good deal and wont add any value to make up for it

Ok, got the grading thing, thanks!
Last question, why would the guy sub a real Morgan? Even a problem one has to have more melt value than the Lincoln that I won, right? Unless he didn't like the final price of the auction and wanted to cut his losses?

I would wait to act on this coin because the person who was supposed to get the coin you got will probably report this to the seller and he'll start looking around for it...

Have you been in contact with the seller? I would imagine that the Morgan you received would have been a shipping mistake The person who bought the Morgan probably has your Lincoln

Yes, I've contacted the seller. His communication back has been brief at best. He's playing dumb and is only offering a refund for the coin I got. He won't even discuss me getting the coin I won.

Unless you think the one you have is fake youd be better off keeping the morgan anyway so not really sure why he wouldnt want to swap it

with trout. I would hang on to it and see if the seller had this particular Morgan as a listing. So long as he did not ship the "DCAM Proof" coin with confirmation or tracking, I would ask him about the proof he sent in order to verify his intent to sell it to you. Then you can fish around for who he may have intended the Morgan to go to, depending on how he takes that.

Apparently it's the wrong size (1 millimeter too small from 38.1), so I'd assume it's a total fake (especially in such unworn condition).

None of the reeding is visible, and on a Morgan it extends out from the rim. That's the extra diameter.

I would think, a lot depends on if it is a coin you want .. and how much you wanted the slabbed proof lincoln.
And as others posted, what was the reason he sent you that coin, by mistake .. maybe because he no longer had the lincoln .. and sent that to see if you would be happy?
Are you collecting slabbed proof Lincoln's?
