Picked this little lady up at one of the local pawn shops recently for $25. I really liked the toning on it.

Nicely done. Have a close look at the mint mark; there are a lot of OMM's for this date and the mint mark location is kind of unique in being so high and left. In addition, have a look at the area around the "ust" in "trust," and at the field under "BUS" on the obverse.

Yeah, I have an idea which VAM this is. Isn't a "great" one, but a very interesting one all the same.

Thanks for your input SsuperDdave. I am totally clueless when it comes to VAM's. I am considering taking a bunch of stuff to the Raleigh, N.C. Coin Club Show for submission to ANACS, do you think this one is worthy of of grading and attribution?

Tough call. Considered against the total number of varieties known (has to be around 5000), very few VAMs are added-value, and many of them are only scarce in higher grades. The collector base is still quite small and it's as much getting your coin in front of the right people as anything else, if you want to profit from a given VAM. That would be something we'd need to decide on a case-by-case basis, and if your interest in having them slabbed is only because of the VAM, the default answer will usually be "probably not."

This is what I had in mind for your coin, based mostly on the location of the mint mark:

http://www.vamworld.com/1884-O+VAM-48

That's why I asked the questions I did above - I can see what looks like the beginning of the die crack above the cap which is known on 48B even though I don't think yours rises to the completeness necessary to call it 48B instead of 48A. Either way, I'd only consider it "worthy" if we could squeeze 64 or better from it.

I see a "slider" in your pics; either 58 or 64 and I lean towards the former because the eagle's talons look rounded. For there to be so little detail on the breast due to strike, I would expect to see those talons more flattened.

If you're serious about the show - I note ANACS is definitely going to be there - drop a listing of the stuff you're thinking of bringing (with estimated grade) and we'll explore which might be worthy VAMs or conditional rarities.

I do not wish to profit from this or any of my classic coins. I only sell 40% halves and 64 Kennedy's. I was wanting to get it graded since it looks like it would grade better than an MS60 and having an attributed coin in my collection would be cool to me.

Wow! At a pawn shop! When I went to MY local pawnshop, I asked the price on a Seated Liberty quarter, and they said "sorry the coins aren't for sale."

I stop in every two weeks, or when they call me with a big score. They pay half of (124) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed s posted melt values, so $25 for this coin was a nice tidy profit for them. I buy more stuff from this shop than I do from real dealers because I get such great deals from them. There are other shops in, but they pay even less and charge well above Red Book when they re-sell.

That's a nice MS- so it's worth around $45. Good job!
