Great Idea! I have a bunch of holed coins in my collection. I think I will do something similar. I have some extra shadow boxes sitting around. Maybe I will organize them by continent or something like that. Thanks for posting.

So I've got this holed large cent with "S.C" punched into the obverse with a square nail--interested in having it on your board? PM me.

Quote: Never saw such a big grade key date coin holed before. Saw this 1948 Canada dollar a while back... that's a $1000 hole. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1948-Canada...:WNA:US:3160At first I also thought this thread would be deliberately minted holed coins. Perhaps worth a separate thread if there isn't one already. I've got one from the Dutch West Indies I'll have to dig out; I recall it's a nice looking copper coin.

I've also got an untidily holed large cent - I wonder if these coins were particularly prone to this sort of vandalism?

I recently got this 1790s Cronebane Irish miners halfpenny. Its been cancelled (the big X) and holed. Maybe used for something. nice square/oblong hole. You might like it - its not a great condition piece, but its a popular type and a good example of a cancelled coin. The edge inscription is mostly obliterated but there is some left. Also in the picture is a square nail from 1863 - Victorian builders are pretty darn lazy and if you lift a floorboard at the door to a room, you'll probably find a small pile of these. Its been bent, but could be fixed easily. Probably handmade. Beltsand it a bit and it'll look lovely. I fished a couple out when we replaced a board which had been cut too small by a lazy plumber who didnt want to lift the whole board. If you're interested in a couple, PM me.

Update time!! Well, it's not quite as pathetic anymore, eh? Still not close to being full, but not as close to being empty either.

Quote: why is it always the scarce dates? Because the common date ones get thrown away, scrapped and melted etc. But the rare date ones stick around BECAUSE they are rare dates.
