Quote: Here's the board now, as it starts to fill out. Looking good. Quote: Unfortunately, not even drain cleaner could remove that large cent's ability to make my skin crawl, so it's going to be sealed away somewhere where I'll never have to look at it. Good call.

Quite a unique collection and idea for how to show them off. Hope you find more!

Thats a really cool idea. If I had more time and stuff I'd do one with silver coins.

Great idea on this! I wonder if I should start this with all the holed JFK halves I find roll hunting? At the end of the year I could take them all off the board and use them to buy a better coin Quote: Actually nail collections ARE legitimate for some. Guilty as charged: Date nails - used by RR's from 1901 to then end of the 60's. They put them into RR ties ("sleepers" for our Euro friends) to keep track of which woods/treatments of the wood lasted longest - hence lest cost Complete set of Western MD RR nails (they didn't use many) Complete set of round headed Sante Fe Nails starting in 1901. Not worth a lot except the incredible history behind them. Hardly anyone collects these anymore (more for me!).

I recently acquired from public sale, a ~15 pound boxlot of mixed world coins dating from early 1800's up to ~2009, and oddly enough, the coin shown below was the *only* un-naturally holed specimen in the entire lot-! It's yours if you want it. Just send a mailing address. It will cost way more to send than the piece is worth, but hey, a display like this is incomplete without a classic USA Wheat cent, eh? What are the odds you'll find one roll hunting in Canada?

It's been a long time! Here is the board now: The pride of my holed copper collection is the Flying Eagle cent (it ran $6 even with the hole - phew!). The oldest coin on there is the King George II farthing, from (if I remember this correctly) 175something. I have managed to diversify this quite a bit! I had gotten lazy with nailing and just let a bunch of those new holed coins sit on my desk for months - I only hammered them in yesterday and checked this thread today. Whoops Sadly, the Buenos Aires real was traded away to Ukraine in exchange for a whole bunch of Soviet, Ukrainian, and Russian coins. It only ran me $1 (plus $1.85 postage), so I think I got a good deal

I promised myself I would never buy a holed coin, not even a key date / filler.
after seeing this I might have to stop avoiding them - ON PURPOSE !

What about those Chinese coins with the hole in the middle? Not a puched hole but one that was made that way. Not sure if China or Japan or what since I don't collect those. Great and unusual thing for displaying. One great thing about this is you don't have to worry about someone stealing it. Not many crooks would know what to do with coins like that. Now to really make this intesting, you need a microscope and a metal writting pen. Nails with flat heads and you microscopically right the discription of the coin on the head of the nail. Also, include where you got it and how much it costs.

I limit this to unintentionally holed coins - and I am often tempted to pound in a copper-nickel or silver coin as well - but just copper looks better and is colourful enough. The Flying Eagle cent (and 1864 Indian Head, found for 50 cents with the hole) is about my limit for what constitutes a "coppery" coin. Most intentionally holed coins have big holes, and there is the risk that they'll fall right off their nail (and including them kind of breaks the appeal of having all "damaged" coins on display). You can still find 2013-dated holed coins being made in Norway, Japan, and probably the Philippines (I've probably missed some countries here).

Quote: It's been a long time! Here is the board now: Coming along nicely! I like it. This one I bid too low on would have been a stunner on your board. http://www.ebay.com/itm/231098129725Never saw such a big grade key date coin holed before.

Wow...what a shame! Not sure how a holed "uncirculated" key is worth its F-12 value.
