She's got a spotlight right on her.
But really how would that happen? I'm not sure that is natural, but I still like it anyways!

Whether it is market acceptable or not I really don't care and FadeTo Black I really don't particularly care for any of your comments on my posts. Ed ANA LM-3175

@Gyrene7483, I think the tone might not be natural. The back is pretty sharp. Perhaps, the grade looks around XF-45

Oh Yeah- I like it. My view on Morgans is the same as jbuck's view on Ikes. Any ol' Morgan will do. Actually, I share jbuck's view on Ikes too. OK, glad that's settled now.

I like Ikes a lot but I don't go out-of-my-way. I like the Buffalo nickels as-well though. I own some high grades but none worth big bucks. I think I'm going to get a MS-65 that is from the Teens. I just got into Morgans. Mine is a MS-63 by PCGS. I do have one junky one though. It's like XF-45. But it has the color like a MS one. But sadly someone abused it. It has scratch mark on the back :(

To those of you inexperienced collectors who have deemed this coin to be artificially toned take note. This coin has what is called environmental damage. This coin survived a house fire. This type of color is quite common in coins which have been exposed to the conditions of a fire. An artificially toned coin gets its color from a person intentionally creating the conditions to artificially tone the coin to enhance its value. Huge difference. To those of you who think you need to render an opinion as to a grade without being asked, this coin is not circulated and how one can say it is without holding it in hand is preposterous. There is no trace of wear on either side of the coin. This coin was examined very closely before purchase for wear and none is evident. Bottom line is, the effect this color has on the eye appeal of this coin is why I bought it. I do not collect Morgan's because they are Morgan dollars. I actually think the obverse is rather bland. I buy them because they are required in the type set holders I am filling. Ed ANA LM-3175

I initially called not market acceptable toning. House fire? Looks like I was right. Not market acceptable. I like how you blast my opinion on the coin then come back and basically confirm what I said. It's pretty much impossible to know if toning is artificial or not, that is an antiquated term. The modern-day terms for toning are market acceptable and not market acceptable. You can get market acceptable toning that is artificial, if done right, just as you can get not market acceptable toning out of a coin that sat in an album for 30 years. Please don't call me inexperienced. I may not have been at it for a couple decades, but I dare say I have a better eye for picking raw coins than 90% of the population of coin collectors. In the past year, I've turned my focus to cherrypicking potentially great coins and have picked some fantastic stuff, so I resent being referred to as inexperienced. I know what environmental damage is, and that coin doesn't have what I would call environmental damage. Without knowing the background, it will be judged by it's color, which doesn't appear, at least from your pictures, to have the dull, lifeless black toning that comes with environmental damage... it appears to be simply, not market acceptable toning. Here's a Morgan toner worth crowing about, by the way... a recent, raw $75 pickup now slabbed.

Gyrene, I like it. It looks like you can see into Miss Liberty's "soul". Personally, I think this coin did VERY well surviving a house fire and still looking this amazing.

The collection was in a large safe which was quite charred from the fire and protected the contents from certain destruction. The fire completely destroyed the house down to the foundation and the truly amazing thing is the safe sat on that foundation for over two months before the owner was able to move it. Fortunately it was located in a fairly remote area in the mountains. Ed ANA LM-3175

Gyrene... cool looking coin I like how the coin looks and knowing the story of how it got that way makes it interesting. I would have that coin in my collection .. Are you putting that coin in your Dollar date set .. or one of the capital coin holder type sets?

it really doesn't matter, the coin is not market acceptable because it has been in contact with heat and thats what caused the "damage" or toning on the coin. No need to be bickering back and forth, If you are happy with your purchase then so be it but I don't think someone calling it what it is before you could educate the next person is out of line on a forum that is trying to educate the collector so they don't get burnt themselves. I have purchased coins I knew were AT myself but always at a marked down price and always for what it was. Some AT coins have beautiful colors that are almost impossible to find in the real world. Since you knew what you were buying I see no foul for buying it, You just have to expect other members with knowledge to tell their opinion when a coin is posted like this
