Hi all.

This coin has a quite dramatic diecrack running through the legend for about 350 Degrees so it appeals to me on that basis. But I'm a babe in the woods as far as Mexican coins go. Any thoughts and tips would be really appreciated. Also the 8 in the date appears to have been struck over an earlier date. (or something) 1776 wouldn't be possible surely.

I can't get the photo uploader to work so here is the item number, hope this is ok. 370637614453

Cheers, darge.

Hi rooneydog I couldn't see the picture of the coin you were referring to, but the overstruck date on this coin is the 8 which is the hundreds, not the decades. I am assuming a restrike on a coin 100 years previous wouldn't be very likely. I have worked out why I couldn't upload now so will post the pic of the coin. Note the size of the 76 compared to the 18.

That type of die was only in use from after the time of Maximilian, but there's nothing in the world stopping the diesinker from using the wrong punch. A good fraction of overdates are of that type. Which mint is it?

Hi publius I hadn't considered the possibility of a simple error at the time of striking, Thanks for that. It could also be just damage around the digit.
Do you feel that this coin could be genuine even given the large disparity between the first 2 digits and the last 2? I am clueless about Mexican coins [and most others too] I just like the design and the diecrack. LOL

Thanks for posting the mint rooneydog.

It seems likely genuine to me. I'd not be surprised if the dies in these provincial mints were made using punches rather than a complete hub. In other words, the impression of the eagle would have gone in separately from the inscriptions, & the diesinker would have punched the digits in the dates separately. If it were hubbed, then quite possibly the Mexico City mint sent out a bunch of die blanks every few years with the eagle, legend, & first two digits of the date, leaving the final digits to be filled in as needed ; in that case, what appears to be an overdate "8 over 7" might just be damage associated with the die crack. It's obvious that the "18" is from a different set of punches than the "76", anyway.

Thanks a lot publius that is how I imagined it might have happened but some knowledgeable collaboration is very appreciated.

Do you happen to know if diecracks are common on early Mexican coinage? I saw an article stating that an overdate didn't attach any premium to one particular coin so perhaps the mint practices meant lots of errors.

Hello NumisMex thanks for that info. I didn't end up buying that coin, eyes far bigger than bank balance unfortunately. I have made a firm resolve to be more responsible in the future.
The coin in your avatar is really beautiful, is it Nicaraguan? I saw one today and it said it was Ng or something. It was $825 I think, might get an even dozen of them.
