Can someone explain the ripple coin for me . Possibly an example of one . I have a 1987 US penny that I think has ripples .

Modern pennies, I hate ripple marks on pennies; love them in a bed of dinosaur bones.

It is caused by poor blank preparation prior to plating. The first few years of Zincolns were plagued by this and other similar problems which is why so many of them simply rot away.

Also could be a die field issue. The best way to tell for sure is if you open a OBW roll of cents and you find two from the same die pair, the marks would be the same on a die issue. On a planchet issue, the lines would be at a different angle. Either way, not a premium.
