Hi all,

It has been a long time since I have been on this site. My rather large collection of coins has been sitting for 4+ years and I have done nothing with it. I am in need of some cash and want to sell off a little bit of my collection...mostly the modern stuff which has not accumulated much value.

I have a complete set of 50 State Quarter rolls from the U.S. mint (except for Hawaii so 98 rolls total). The first 8 P+D sets are in those cool blue boxes. 21 P+D sets and in the original mint boxes labeled R51 etc... and 20 P+D sets are loose.

My question is where should I sell these? How much should I ask for? I really do not feel like breaking them up and would like to get them off my hands in one shot. I paid around $33 a set (approx $1617 total) as that's what the mint was selling them for and still is.

Thank you all and I apologize if this is posted in the wrong spot.

You could try selling them online, at a Local Coin Store, or at a local coin show. Unfortunately, most won't be much over face value. On ebay, make sure you clue in this following formula if you DO NOT have an ebay store:

.871 x (Item Price + Listed Shipping) - 0.30 - Actual Shipping Cost

IMO .. it will be hard to get over face value for them, unless you have a outlet.
Like your own coin shop. ebay you might be able to make some over face on some of the roll sets, but with fees it will be a lot of effort for little gain.

When I buy large groups of rolls like that, I end up breaking open a lot of the rolls and just keep the high grade coins, then dump the rest in the bank.

I agree that ebay may be your best recourse, but unfortunately, I believe it will doubtfull you will be able to recoup your cost. ebay seems to be full of State Quarter rolls that are not selling or sell very close to face value only. One person here in my local area got so discourage with them that he turned in an almost complete set of $25 mint sew bags of State Quarters to a local bank for face value. I have been able to get most of the higher value ones at face value from them. The rest are just being put into circulation. Mint rolls may be of more value but I'm not sure.

The time to sell those Mint rolls was years ago when for some reason you could get over $300 for the Tennessee set. I was stuck with a lot of those after the bottom fell out, but there was a time you could easily double your money on ebay, but the sets fell out of favor and demand dried up.

to get an idea of what's still selling do a "completed" search on ebay, using the Advanced Search option and see what's been selling and what hasn't.

When the market dried up I started breaking open the rolls and selling rolls which contained 40 different State/Mint coins with no duplicates and put them up for sale as a Buy It Now for $19.99 + shipping.

In many cases it's hard to make money on anything you buy from the Mint because their prices are so high. You could put them up for auction with the starting price at Mint Issue price, but many won't sell.

You're going to have to have patience, and unfortunately be prepared to take a loss.

Personally, I would sell them on ebay, but I suggest you search them for doubled dies and/or varieties before selling them. Good luck!
