I found this penny today while CRH. Take a look at the 9, it looks like it has a little leg coming out the top of it. It looks the same as the bottom of the nine. I have never seen something like this.

Or a contact mark? Hard to tell from the image.

That image is the best I can do with my point and shoot. It looks like a little nub coming out of the top of the nine. The metal is the same height as the rest of the nine where it meets the nine and then tapers down just like the bottom leg of the nine.

It has nothing to do with an extra tail of the 9. 1961 is the same direction turned 180 degrees.

A closer image would show more? But post it again when you can get a closer image someday. Not a valuable coin, just to answer what it is.

@coop I was able to use my loop to take a picture through. I did not think it was worth any money. I was just curious because it is different.

On the older coins, it is typically TOUGH to determine if it happened at the mint, or in its afterlife. Its like this 1983. It looks like a banana peeled "9". It also looks like there is an extra slab of thin metal on the coin, south of the "98".

I Call it the 1983 Banana Peeled Coin

Another mystery of what happened to it. = )

That helps a lot. It appears the coin took a hit and split part of the 9 off. Just damage. But the extra image gave me what I needed to see to know for sure. Thanks.
