Hello ctguy,
I'll offer my opinion on the subject to try and answer some of your questions for you. Hopefully others will chime in and offer their perspective as well and you can decide what's best for you based on a few different opinions.
If you are looking to buy a sizable amount at once, and you don't have a local place to check out, I would use one of the reputable online dealers: Provident Metals, APMEX, etc. My first choice is always Provident as their prices are tough to beat and their service is great. APMEX has a very wide selection, but tend to be a little pricier. Goldmart may have better prices on Provident on certain things, but their service isn't as good as the others in my experience. Having said that, I've never had a 'problem' with them, but I've had delays, been given the run around, etc. before finally receiving delivery of an order. Scottsdale silver is also a good source, though their prices will be a little higher than Provident, but they do offer free shipping on orders over $500, so you should take that into consideration.
I would avoid ebay for bullion bar purchases. ebay is a great source if you're looking for something that is rare or hard to find at one of the online vendors, but is overpriced on standard bars and rounds.
As for bars vs. rounds (private mint) vs. coins (government mint), that is really personal preference. Coins will have a higher premium relative to spot on the front end, but you should also be able to get more for them when selling.
If you're looking to spend as little as possible (relative to spot), bars or rounds will be the way to go. Provident often has both for $.89-.99 over spot, and sometimes has free shipping if you include a certain type of item. Here are a few links showing 10 oz bars that are $.99 over: http://www.providentmetals.com/bull...ver-bar.html
Here are some rounds for $.89 over spot: http://www.providentmetals.com/ohio...so-9001.html
As tpg22 suggested, I wouldn't go all in at once. I'd start easy, maybe 10-20 oz first. Get the order, see how you like what you got, the vendor you bought from, and proceed from there. Maybe start with a mix of bars, rounds, and coins and see what you like best. I personally have some of all of it, but have mostly coins and bars out of personal preference.

I am looking to purchase about 100oz of silver I'm thinking bar form maybe best but I know nothing about purchasing bar silver, who are the tried and true names, secondary markets, new players, assayed vs non assayed, I'm cautious of this kind of purchase via the the bay are bars better than bullion or rounds.
