Seeking advice or knowledge,

I am looking to purchase about 100oz of silver I'm thinking bar form maybe best but I know nothing about purchasing bar silver, who are the tried and true names, secondary markets, new players, assayed vs non assayed, I'm cautious of this kind of purchase via the the bay are bars better than bullion or rounds.

I would prefer to purchase proof but bullion for long term hold is what I'm thinking great for me but better for the niece 10-20-yrs down the road

Are there any links here at CCF or outside that have the best silver bars for dummies 101 material?

I don't have enough experience yet to understand the international coin markets per say so I shy away from foreign country coins.

If you were looking to add bulk bullion silver best bang for the buck highest liquidity what would you do?

I would suggest not buying it all at once and vary what you buy. You will pay a high premium for proof, but many feel that will hold up the best in a drop. The cheapest will be generic bars but those are also the hardest to sell for a good price when the time comes. When I started I went with rolls of Silver Eagles, a few graded ones, a few proof coins, some 57-64 proof and mint sets and 90% in the form of Walking Liberty halves and Peace dollars. Right now the premium is too high for me to add 90%. If silver takes another move to the down side I may add some more ASE's.

If you live in an area that has coin shows, that is a good way to see what is available. Visit a site like APMEX and you will see a wide range of items.

Most of the material about silver is put out by people trying to sell silver. If you search this site you will find many threads with discussion about silver.

Hello ctguy,

I'll offer my opinion on the subject to try and answer some of your questions for you. Hopefully others will chime in and offer their perspective as well and you can decide what's best for you based on a few different opinions.

If you are looking to buy a sizable amount at once, and you don't have a local place to check out, I would use one of the reputable online dealers: Provident Metals, APMEX, etc. My first choice is always Provident as their prices are tough to beat and their service is great. APMEX has a very wide selection, but tend to be a little pricier. Goldmart may have better prices on Provident on certain things, but their service isn't as good as the others in my experience. Having said that, I've never had a 'problem' with them, but I've had delays, been given the run around, etc. before finally receiving delivery of an order. Scottsdale silver is also a good source, though their prices will be a little higher than Provident, but they do offer free shipping on orders over $500, so you should take that into consideration.

I would avoid ebay for bullion bar purchases. ebay is a great source if you're looking for something that is rare or hard to find at one of the online vendors, but is overpriced on standard bars and rounds.

As for bars vs. rounds (private mint) vs. coins (government mint), that is really personal preference. Coins will have a higher premium relative to spot on the front end, but you should also be able to get more for them when selling.

If you're looking to spend as little as possible (relative to spot), bars or rounds will be the way to go. Provident often has both for $.89-.99 over spot, and sometimes has free shipping if you include a certain type of item. Here are a few links showing 10 oz bars that are $.99 over: http://www.providentmetals.com/bull...ver-bar.html

Here are some rounds for $.89 over spot: http://www.providentmetals.com/ohio...so-9001.html

As tpg22 suggested, I wouldn't go all in at once. I'd start easy, maybe 10-20 oz first. Get the order, see how you like what you got, the vendor you bought from, and proceed from there. Maybe start with a mix of bars, rounds, and coins and see what you like best. I personally have some of all of it, but have mostly coins and bars out of personal preference.

1---As said above, don't buy it all at once.
2---Window-shop your LCS's to see which are the good ones and which should be avoided.
3---For online vendors, Provident has a combination of good customer service, competitive prices, reasonable delivery times and a long-established good
reputation that's hard to beat. APMEX has the biggest inventory. Goldmart may sometimes have lower prices, but their reputation for delivery delays isn't good.
Scottsdale, SilverTowne and Monarch sell their own poured bars, which are kind of nice. If you want to get daring and go buying stuff via ebay, exercise the
utmost in caution. Buy only from vendors with thousands of positive feedbacks and close to a 100% positive feedback ratio. ALWAYS pay with a CC through
PayPal because doing so provides the most buyer protection. ebay is the global refuge of scammers and their copies, fakes and counterfeits. Newbies (and
everybody else, too) are always at risk of taking a hosing there.
4---On what to buy...that gets complicated. Some favor just cheap, current bars--"buy 'em cheap and stack 'em deep" thinking. Some favor vintage poured
bars (Engelhard, etc). Some favor rounds. Some favor low-premium govt-issued coins (Eagles, Maples, Philharmonics, Libertads). Some favor higher-premium
"semi-numis" coins (Kookaburras, Pandas, Britannias). Some favor proofs only. I prefer going with a diversified and balanced stack--part bars/rounds, part
low-premium coins and part semi-numis coins. I regularly shift focus and build up whatever part of my stack has fallen fallen behind the other parts. By keeping
it diversified and balanced, I'll never get caught with a big pile of what's fallen out of current popularity.
5---On assayed vs raw bars... For Au or Pt, I'd stick with assay cards but for Ag I'm happy with raw bars, but... it's your choice.
6---Above all else, do your own research and your own thinking and make your own decisions and choices.

Happy studying, shopping and stacking.

I would guess Engelhards lol....

I guess I just prefer to fork out a bit of premium on silver bars, verses buying the boring NTRz or APMEX or Snake 10 bars right close to spot at 225 or so.....

If I am gonna buy close to spot items, I do that via gold commemorative proofs in the near quarter oz. form via I have constitution 1987, Liberty 1986, and bald eagle 2008 and plan to ad World war 2 and Jamestown next, but hey wrong metal were talking silver bars lol....

Another-words gold is so high might as well find best bang for buck close to spot, so I get those at 325 to 350 and get ebay bucks on those being coins not bullion....

Engelhard is the Ferrari of silver bars, the top of the market IMO, trust and antique silver bar history tied into one....

Johnson and Mathey aint exactly slouches and have been around forever as well....

I also have been hunting ODD sized European bars, and PAMP SUISSE or any UBS Swiss bank bar is pretty darn respected as well world wide, esp overseas.....

I hunt 100 gram bars (just over 3 oz) , 250 gram bars (just over 8 oz. quarter kilo) and 500 gram bars (just over 16 oz. half kilo) and often find they sell about 13 over spot....

Geiger is another company you can find that makes them out of Germany, via Silber (silver English translation) bars and they are the real deal silver bars, found at ebay APMEX....

See if there's a bullion broker, not a coin shop, in your area. I can get bullion from them at quite a savings over any online store I've seen.

Definitely go to a reputable dealer. If it is too good to be true....you could end up with fake silver bars.

There is always a first time in life. Congrats for your decision of buying silver bullion. I'd suggest take time and do your research to draw up your own conclusions about what's the best for you and from where to buy. It's OK to miss the bus of silver-price-dip than to give into panic buying and end up with a fake. Good luck.

Thank you everyone for freely sharing what I'm sure has taken most of you years to learn. The great advise and depth of knowledge here at CCF is astounding but more so the willingness to share it with me.

Meh,
Silver is Silver to me. I have bars and coins. It really just depends what I find for a good price and closest to spot. Of course this is not to say that people who hunt for numismatic value are wrong. I simply just prefer silver for the silver.

I have ordered from MCM. They sometimes seem to have good prices on their free shipping items
(Although they accidently duplicated my order and sent me double! Although I returned it even though they didnt catch it...)

http://www.moderncoinmart.com/

I have also ordered from Goldmart
goldmart.com
They have some pretty competitive prices also

I bought my first bar it's a 10 oz Johnson Matthey Silver Bar (Pressed, JM Logo) from APMEX looked nice $266.00.

I'm stoked and I could not have done it without all the great help and advice in this thread.

Thanks
