I was looking at the 2013 uncirculated sets at mint.ca today and noticed the baby, oh canada, wedding sets etc. are not inclusive of a 50 cent piece any more. No penny and no 50 cent piece but same price as previous years. Not very happy about this.

When RCM eliminated the penny, I believe they said that pennies were still going to be manufactured for collection purposes (I don't know where I saw that, but I do remember hearing this). It would be dissapointing to see no pennies at all dated 2013

The sets that get sent out to souvenir stands only have the circulation coins.
I noticed that with a CN Tower set in 2012 (six coins).
They make a lot of these sets, and I think they want to maintain the relative scarcity of the 50c.

And then deleted the penny in 2013...but like you said, they kept the price the same.

The sets are priced as a product, not as the aggregate value of each piece. Sometimes, very rarely, that works in the consumers favor, like the deluxe proof set from 2012, which if bought at even 10-15% above issue price, can be pieced out for significantly more.

True but what if next year they drop the 50 cent piece from the premium set? Doubt anyone is gonna say 'oh well' and still pony up $230 because the value of the aggregate might be more than the set. The simple fact is the Mint downsized the baby/wedding etc sets and kept the price the same and because those are annual offerings, it makes the 2012 and onward sets less appealing to collectors. All for the sake of 50 cents. Pretty cheap of the RCM especially since the product margin on these sets was already huge. edited to correct auto-correct incorrect correction

First baby step towards phasing out the 50 cent piece entirely perhaps? Just get rid of it and see if anybody even notices?

I guess my confusion is why was the 50 cent piece omitted? I understand the penny because all sets lost it and it wasn't produced at all. But they place a 50 cent piece in the regular uncirculated set. Why shouldn't the other sets still have them. It's the same finish. It was less than $4 face value to begin with. Now closer to $3 for a $20 price tag.

On the upside maybe it will make the rolls of 50 cent pieces more valuable...if they ever get around to shipping them (waiting since February)

Cc I can't believe you are still waiting for those!! That's ridiculous. I think mine had come within a month.

CC - go down to the Mint, bang on the front door, and yell, "Gimme my money!"

Just make sure you stress "my" in that sentence. Wouldn't want anyone to overhear it as "the".
