According to Charlton, the 1983 quarter only had a mintage of a little over 13 million. 1982 - almost 172 million. 1984 - almost 120 million. And yet despite having a mintage a fraction of most other years, it is valued in both Charlton and Trends as pretty much the same as the other years in that decade, with a slightly higher premium in the lower grades.

Is this a misprint in the book or is there some other reason why such a relative rarity is undervalued?

The mintage is correct.
Although lower than many other years,13 million was plenty enough for all collectors. It's strictly supply and demand.
The price and availability of these will only increase as the number of collectors increases.
If you believe the number of collectors will increase significantly in the future then by all means stock up on these lower mintage coins.

Thanks for the tip to the pieceofcurrency.com site qbvsite. I have never come across it before but it looks useful.

As for the 1983 quarters, looks like I only have to find 13,161,995 more and I'll have cornered the market!

DBM..Thanks for that...you guys and gals (experts) have such great ways of finding the important facts at the touch of a "high speed" button...

OK..... I do have a few rolls of the 83 quarters....and only 83's...... (someone in 83/84 told me to because of the low mintage)

I guess it would be best for me to open them up and look for the 65's(if any) ....but what are my chances ...slim to none ..I'm guessing.
