I have a 1932 George V penny in silver or some other metal that has a small Masonic emblem (with a G) on the base of each side. The emblem partially obliterates the year on the reverse side. It is nice and shiny still which leads me to believe it's not silver. I've looked through a lot of web sites and can't find any in silver for 1932/George V.

Does this emblem make it a token, or were some pennies issued in silver metal? If it is a token does that mean it has little or no value?

Thanks. I'm not a collector - just going through things that have been left to me.

the emblem sounds like PMD, but can you post pictures of both sides?

the mason emblem on the obverse looks raised, or is that just the lighting?

No silver cents were issued.Your coin has the appearance of a plated coin, not a mint error.
The marks are called counterstamps, they are not punched in at the mint but after the fact by people for various reasons.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

It does look like it was plated and stamped and then polished.

Sadly...Looks like it was high grade before the tampering......

A encused stamp is possible. But could anyone hammer with enough force to cause a relief?

Is it weakly magnetic?

I think so.
Keep it anyway. It'll brighten up your collection, if nothing else. At least, it is less likely to tarnish.
If you are really curious about it, get it weighed accurately. If it was silver, it would weigh about 20% more, if same thickness as a standard coin. A micrometer screw gauge will tell you that.

Some of those Mason stamps are for sale on ebay right now, so you could start making your own.

I think a "real" Mason is supposed to get his own penny (usually the size of a British penny!) struck for his lodge, then put his mark in the middle, but for the rest these normal pennies have to do. Some of the counterstamps, however, are very elaborate (I've seen a two-sided counter-die set that does the compass and some symbolism).
