Hi, Everyone!

I just got back a batch of coins from PCGS - after a very long wait - and I want to celebrate.

So here are the three commemorative halves I sent in. Can you match the grade with the coin?

A. 1920-D Pilgrim half
B. 1926-S Oregon half
C. 1936-S Bay Bridge half

1. MS64
2. MS65
3. MS65+

By the way, this is the first time I've received a plus grade on a submitted coin!

Keep the votes coming! I'll post the answer after everyone gets a chance to play...

Incidentally, it is interesting for me to see what everyone thinks, since I am not an expert on grading these coins.

Heck ... you made it too easy.

Simply posting the coin photos would have been better fun ... I suspect that many of our experts ... myself humbly included ... could have gotten quite close to the PCGS assigned grades.

Anyways ... lovely examples of all three and truly congratulations for adding such fine coins to your set.

Are you pursuing a type set of these? ... if so ... a very fun and challenging collecting adventure. Appears you are off to a good start indeed.

My guesses:

The Pilgrim is MS65+
The Oregon Trail is MS65
The Bay Bridge is MS64

I feel like theres always a trick to these types of quizes so I'm going to break the consensus a little.

basebal - the toning is throwing me on the bay bridge coin - but all 3 are so nice it is tough to call. I think the ship on the back of the Pilgrim might just be the + part for that coin - it is actually pretty stunning as I look at these again.

Doug I'm thinking the toning is throwing the luster off the luster of the bay bridge in the picture too. Id bet its more of a shining golden brown in hand. I agree, the ship on the pilgram really pops in the photo

For me, I can't see any dings, hairlines or nicks on these, so it has to come down to toning, those little black spots, and general eye appeal.
Can anyone see what I may have missed re nicks, scratches etc?
A: 65+
B: 65
C: 64.

A - 64
B - 65+
C - 65

I'm guessing that spot on the front area of the hat of the Pilgy held it back.

64, 65+ 65. Oregons tend to be 65 or better. yours looks 65+ to me. The Bay Bridge is a solid 65 - the toning is typical for the issue. The pilgrim I don't see 65 at all. Dings in the hat, on the fields, around the lettering. 64 and a good 64 at that.

I know you all were up to photograding without hints, but I thought a slightly different format would be a fun change of pace. Thank you all for humoring me!

These coins are all really pretty, and of course, very close in grade. That said, cc99999 and FadeToBlack nailed it. The answer is: A. Pilgrim MS64, B. Oregon MS65+, C. Bay Bridge MS65. Thank you, especially, cc99999, for your clear explanations of those grades. It helps me (a commemorative novice) to understand PCGS' opinions.

By the way, the Bay Bridge is the first coin I've had that doesn't look as good in PCGS TrueView as it does in hand. (Usually I find TrueView makes the coin appear to its greatest advantage - or beyond!) But the warm gold toning on the Bay Bridge highlights the amazing detail of the reverse beautifully. It is actually my favorite of the three.

Nice coins ProfLiz and a great way to share them. I agree with the explanations, and I think the reverse of the Pilgrim is why I choose it as the 65 over the Bay Bridge coin. I agree that this one seems to have a golden tone regularly...maybe it is the natural Golden State for the coin?

Thanks - that was interesting.
