Hello all. I have selected 3 Morgan dollars and my 1921 Peace dollar to submit to NGC for certification. My question is, do you think that my 1879-S Morgan will get a PL designation? It has a mirror-like surface, which I tried to capture with my camera. I had the flash off. The reflective shine is from outside light hitting its surface. What do you think? The other 3 coins I selected due to their toning, and I am a huge fan of toned coins. The 1889 has a very nice golden/green hue. The reverse is completely free of toning. I absolutely love the rainbow tone on the 1898. One thing I have noticed is that this rainbow streak has spread and become more pronounced in the two years since placing it in the Coin World slab. I have heard that this happens sometimes, not that I mind it. Looking forward to hearing your opinions. This pic shows the rainbow color on the 1898-P a little more. This mirror shine is not from a camera flash- PL? OK: I just uploaded a better shot of the 1879-S. It shows the mirror-like field much better. AND another shot of the rainbow: Edited by Darth Morgan 08/16/2013 12:20 pm

I guess I'm getting carried away with the photos, but here is another "mirror" shot with the lights off. The only light coming in is from the window. You can clearly see the DVDs reflected on the coins surface:

That's a beautiful reflective obverse - excellent capture of it in the last pic - but both sides need to be equally reflective to get the designation.

Headed to work right now, but I'll take pictures of the reverse tonight and tomorrow. The reverse is also reflective like this.

I was not convinced until that last pic. Going by that one pic, I would say it has a fair chance of making PL. Dave is right though. The reverse has to be just as reflective. And I have to say, that toned 98 is beautiful! I use the same slabs for my dollar coins as well. I love them.

Yeah, I love the Coin World slabs. They fit very nicely in NGC storage boxes. They don't wiggle around at all. Official NGC slabs make all kinds of noise in official NGC storage boxes. I think they need to revamp their boxes for a tighter fit for their slabs.. It would be nice. Thanks for the comments. Smokeriderdon- The '98 Morgan is one of my favorites. Maybe they'll give it a star, or maybe not. I'm still not sure how some coins get a star and some don't. What is the criteria? Also, do I need to state on the submission form somewhere about asking them to review the 79-S for a PL designation, or is this something that they will decide on their own? I am going to join NGC (associate level) when I get home tonight, and I haven't actually viewed the submission forms yet.

Nice toning! Definitely let us know what they grade.
I'd like to see the last pic you posted with the top off the slab. (I also use the same slabs for my raw coins) but the "white" books are reflecting off the slab, so if you take one with the top off the slab it will better show the reflectivity of the coin.. The colored books won't reflect on the black incert like the white does.. So just to be sure it's not a slab reflection please post the same pic with the slab open..

Nice stuff! NGC should give those good grades and raise the value nicely.

I'm worried about the '98. To me, the coin is obviously circulated, meaning NGC will call it AT (not to mention a circulated 1898 isn't really valuable enough to grade). This is supposed to be bag toning, and a circulated coin isn't in the bag any longer so shouldn't be toned.

That 1898 has beautiful toning. Also, to be honest, I think all the above pics will grade nicely.

I'm really not comfortable with the toning on the 98, it has a lot of red flags regarding the tone.

I'm with the majority on the 1898 I think it's AU, and will possibly get a details grade on the toning. AU53 IMO.
As to the designation of PL, no you don't ask for it, if the coin warrants it - it will be assigned automatically. It takes a heck of a super coin in 1879-S series to get a really high grade. I think it just may get a PL on the slab but probably not more than a MS64 grade, probably will grade at MS63PL.
1889 I think MS62 1921 I can't tell from the photos.
Would like to see these coins shot with out the holder in the way and straight on with no tilting, making the whole coin in focus evenly.

OK guys, I took some pictures with the top cover off. All I can say is- WOW! This shot was taken with just my lamp light on. Again, the row of DVDs is now even more clear in the field. The reverse photo didn't turn out as well. I took several, and they all looked more grainy and blurry than the obverse shot. Again, though, the DVDs are visible in the field. I took this with the light from my monitor to try to capture the mirror. Lamp light source: My photography skills leave a lot to be desired, but I'm trying. It will take some time. Westcoin- thanks for your response regarding my question about the PL designation. I'm going to send these in on Monday. I will post pictures when they come back. And as much as I would love to believe that the toning on the 1898 is genuine, I agree with the opinions that it is more than likely artificial. I never really was sure to begin with. I was just hoping. But we'll see what NGC says.
