A friend of mine let me borrow his compound microscope he picked up at Value Village last week for $19.99. He knows I'm looking to get one and he figured I could try it to make sure it is what I'm looking for. It is a older model Boreal. There is no light source and as stated...it is a older model with the mirror underneath to reflect lite for viewing slides. It came with the solid plate that is grey on one side and white on the other. The eye pieces are WF 10X. The microscope has 3 magnification levels (1X, 3X & 6X) so it is 10X, 30X & 60X. The optics are in great shape but could use a bit of cleaning. I gave them a quick cleaning just to remove some visible debris. I used my Canon PowerShot A3300IS (16MP) to take the pics. What do you think? I good start I believe. I need to get better lighting but it will do for now.

Using a single halogen desk lamp connected to a dimmer switch.

Thank you. I will have to work on the lighting but I think the scope will do what I want it to do. Once I get the lighting I want and diffused correctly it will help tremendously.

Here is my Very expensive setup. LOL! Dont miss out on the price stickers still attached to the microscope and the light. Total value for the two is $22.98 I need new lighting as the halogen desk lamp really heats up and I can not attach any type of diffuser to it as it may melt or catch fire. The only thing not shown is the camera which is just a Canon Point and shoot which I mentioned above. I payed $128.99 for it Christmas 2012.

Please ignore the mess on the desk behind the microscope and light. LOL! Clutter is my life when looking at coins. :)

Thanks for the pics - so you just hold the camera up to the microscope objective or do you use a tripod for stabilization? I looked at pics online of your camera and tried to image how you could get such clear pics - I have a Kodak Easy Share and its lens is s lot larger than your Canon so I have not yet tried to make a way for it to "look through" the objective on the microscope. I know I would have to make an adapter of some sort. It looks like your Canon is much better suited for looking through an objective.

edited for spelling

I just hold the cameras lens flat against the objective. I could make a adapter out of PVC pipe for it but since I'm just borrowing this microscope until I pick one up...I will wait until I have my own to make a adapter. The main thing is to hold the lens flat against the objective and to maneuver it until you have it set correct. It is fairly easy to do so and once I got the hang of it there were no issues. For my camera...the lens is just about the same size as the objective so I can hold it easily with one hand with my fingers on both the lens and objective. I also set the cameras timer to 2 seconds just to make sure there is no movement from clicking the shutter button.

Over all I really like the cropped photos the best but all the pics are good.

Thanks again for the info - this is a great method to use. I will have to make an adaptor before I can try this with my microscope - it was on the to do list anyway. And now b/c of your post I know using a microscope for the pics is feasible! Thanks for the info
