You may have seen the 1849 Seated dollar that I picked up last year, being fully aware that it was a "details" coin, "Questionable Color". I thought that it would be a good candidate for the PCGS Restoration Service, so I sent it off and it was received on 06 Aug 2013. I got it back on 16 Aug 2013, with a note saying that "there was nothing that we could do" (or something to that effect). I was of course, distraught, but got to thinking that perhaps NCS (Numismatic Conservation Service, a subsidiary of NGC) might be able to do something with it since they have been in practice for a longer period of time. Just kicking around an idea...again.

It may be messed with but it has great eye appeal. I know you collect PCGS holder-ed coins, is it in a slab? Could you ask them to list it only genuine without the "questionable color"?

It would be a disservice to list the coin as "Genuine" without delineating a reason.

I think PCGS was worried about the evenness of the color on each side; with so much real estate available, they're expecting some sort of color progression. The "halos" around the peripheral devices doesn't help. I would be inclined to believe that NCS would decline it also, given the relative darkness of some areas on the coin.

Me? I'd consider reversing the silver sulfide reaction (if that's what it is) chemically, but I'm reckless.

It's possible muddler, but I have already received it back and don't feel compelled to shell out another batch of fees just for just changing the label. I thought that PCGS could have done something other than sending it back with no action taken other than a withdraw from my checking account for a "sticky label". I am not even sure that the dollar was cracked & reholdered since it was freshly slabbed last year prior to the auction, Nov 2012.

Just wondering if NCS can do anything to it?

Just FYI: NCS will also send back a coin untouched if they do not believe they can "restore" it.

A few years ago, I won several coins in a Heritage auction and decided to send one to NCS to see if they could do anything about its surface spotting - the coin looks like it has a case of "golden" measles. It was sent back in its original holder with a note indicating that the "spots" could not be removed without damaging the coin.

I had a Morgan that was almost black on the Reverse and NCS didn't decline it. I am not saying they wont but mine was very dark on the Reverse and they "conserved" it. If I remember correctly it was in a NGC slab when I sent it to NCS not sure if that mattered or not
