They were asking $5 US at a coin shop (not my usual one) a half hour north of my house. I knocked him off guard a little with an offer of $4 (Oz $4.44) in circulated Ike dollars, stood firm and he acquiesced. Thumbnail-ish pic: Full Resolution: http://i.imgur.com/YUeW0gy.jpgShowed it to my grandpa, and he said "I'd hate to have a bunch of these in my pocket!" I think I did OK, but I could be wrong. Am I?

Were these struck in the 1800s?

Quote: Were these struck in the 1800s? I don't think so, the 'I' below the bottom scroll (inside the inner ring, above the date) stands for India, 3.32 million were minted at Calcutta, in 1916 during WWI.

I have several hundred of that year (not rare). I used to get them for 20 cents each from scratch bins but now any Geo V coins are quickly cherry picked (leaving the roos)so I only pick one up every few months. In bulk lots of Geo V pennies they are common enough and bulk Geo V go for 50 cents and up. Your coin is barely above average circulation grade and worth perhaps a dollar.

Even a dollar would be a stretch. At the end of the day $4 is t too ba to have a new coin in your collection from a country or denomination that you didnt have previously. I've happily paid $5 for a world coin worth 50c jst eause I hadnt seen it before and id rather have that coin than an extra coffee.

I have paid more that market value for some of my Canadian large cents simply because I like them and they are bloody hard to get in Aus. $5 is cheap for the enjoyment you get IMHO

So, my new penny is nothing too special as far as Australian pre-decimal coins go. What grade would you guys give it? Poking around the Internets, this price guide is a little high then?

Grade is VG. That price guide is pretty darn good. It has F-12 at $2.

Hmmm, what are the general grading standards for such a coin?

See here for grading KGV Aussie coins: http://www.anda.com.au/documents/re...%20coins.pdfDid you have it pegged as a higher grade? If you were to look at high grade examples you will notice the significant wear on your coin. The detail on the obverse is quite intricate on a fully struck uncirculated coin. Your coin is a decent VG example with no big rim nicks, damage or scratches etc.

Here's another example of the same coin. Notice there is more detail in the headband of the King's crown and his beard, plus the regalia of his robe. This one is about VF (Aussie grade) or Sheldon EF-40. Correct me if I'm wrong enworb, please.

Im going to assume that the obverse rims are a result of photo cropping rather than actual damage to the coin. I would have called that one gVF. Theres pretty good detail in the crown and I can make out 8 pearls. This is my 1916 penny http://www.numisbid.com.au/Browse/PCGS/24735646/The highest pearls are more apparent in hand and the coin has a beautiful blue tone.

trout hit the nail on the head. What is common in one country may be scare in another. A while ago I offered to trade a coin with a collector in Sweden. "Oh, those are very scarce over here. Yes, I agree to the trade." And, of course, in this day $5 is a small price to pay for years of enjoyment.

Quote: Im going to assume that the obverse rims are a result of photo cropping rather than actual damage to the coin. That's right, I didn't like the background so I used a elliptical selection tool to crop the images which left the rims looking much worse, I won't do that again. That's a very nice coin you have enworb!

I would have said it's a bit better than VG.
