How do you know it is a fake? Is it faked for coin collecting purposes or was it counterfeited back in the day for spending purposes? If it was real in this not very good condition would it be worth much in any case? Thanks
The counterfeits are aimed at the collectors market. There was a very small mintage so while they did circulate they would not have been commonly encountered. A real one in fine condition would be in the low $'000's.
The details of this piece are way too blurred, and this suggests a 2nd or third generation copy off the original. The surface texture suggests that it was cast, not struck. It appears that it was artificially patinated to look old, and to hide some of the blurred detail.
These pieces are generally faked to fool novice collectors, at least your anonymous friends here in the CCF, who have nothing to gain or loose, can say it like it is. This one could have been made as much as 40 years ago, but could have been more recent.
I have seen a couple of genuine examples up for auction over the years.
