I found 5 of these while searching through some rolls I bought at a local bank. At the very least this is a new variety, but could be, a yet to be defined, mint error.

The rim pictures of the coin on top is of a normal Adams Dollar's edge. The edge lettering strike on a normal coin is beveled towards the center of the lettering and numbers. It is also deeply struck.

However, the coin below the normal Adams Dollar's edge is shallower, and shows signs of doubling, and the date is nearer the rim. So, can it be called a Near Rim Edge Date, "Doubled" or "Shallow" Edge Lettering?

The pictures are large and take time to download. You can notice the difference with a 10x loop, but these where taken using a microscope. Some of the pictures are not that great, but it was difficult to photograph.
I will try better photos later, but the way light reflects in the different depths of the normal vs. the shallow letters, make it difficult to show the true differences.

That is nothing really. The strike quality on the edge lettering that I have noticed on the Washingtons is quite variable. Since they are made with a roller press, not a collar, this is to be expected. I have seen them placed at the top part of the rim and the bottom part, shallow and deep.

Also, since the roller press has a positive die, I would imagine that die wear and fatigue are common occurrences.

I agree with biokemist6 about the placement & depth of the lettering, nothing special there. However, there is an obvious difference to me in the "form" of the letters. The first set has a uniform bevel that comes to a point at the bottom of the letter. The second set appears to have a shorter bevel that becomes flat at the bottom of the letter. The difference is best illustrated by the pictures of the 07 & the UN.

It looks to me like the dies were ground flat on the second set of letters. It looks too even to be die wear, although maybe it was done because of die wear. I don't know if this would be special or worth more but it certainly looks interesting.

Thanks, but it took a few to get them just right, and they could still use some improvement.
