I was roll hunting Kennedy half dollars today and saw a weird error on a 1972 D. You can make out the G but the F is almost completely gone. Is this a catalogued error and does this add value to the coin?

cheers

Hi

This is fairly common amongst these half's
as well as on other coin denominations.
Not an actual mint error or die variety, but it is caused
by a couple of different factors. Debris, usually
grease gets onto the die thus blocking the full detail
punch from happening. Also the cause could be just a worn
die most often called Die Deterioration. One or even both initials can be either missing completely or just partially.
This can occur on other devices on the coin also. No real value or premium but some people collect these coins. The strange part about this phenom. is that there are 3 coins out there that carry a very good premium for some reason
even though they are the exact same thing as far as the cause of the missing devices. The 1922-D Lincoln Cent with either no D mint mark or just a partial one visible, The so called 3 legged Buffalo nickel and the 1982 and 1983 No P mintmrk. Strange world coin collecting is. It should be what's good for the goose is good for the gander so to speak
but it is not always that way. Back to the no FG's, I believe that there is no actual die variety with that attribute. Please correct me anyone if I am incorrect.

Doe overpolishings and die wear. Indian has the third thing and that is filed die of grease. Impossible for this to be missing off a new die as it is part of the design with all the other devices.
