I think I'm coming off (or maybe not yet coming off ) a wave of not really caring. After having travelled around for a bit, I've now got a ton of 2x2s with all the sizes mixed up, so I'll have a headache inducing time separating them, especially the similarly sized ones. I've got loads of coins ready and uncatalogued that need to be 2x2ed, I've had a two swap offers which didn't end up going anywhere, when they probably could've, if I'd tried harder, and another swap offer I've kept on hold. Even this is the first time I've signed in on here in a while (sorry! ). Not like I want to get rid of my coins, or don't care about them or increasing my collection, but...it just doesn't enter my mind. Maybe I'm just overwhelmed, or maybe I just can't be bothered just right now. Like with photography: It is something I'm interested in, something I've pursued, but then I'll sometimes spend months not picking up the camera and looking around for a picture to take or something interesting to do. Or with my desire to learn to play a musical instrument, I have a guitar in a bag, but for months on end, I might forget I even have it. So does it come to you like that as well? Or is everyone here a diehard permanent coin-lover?

I suspect you'll hear as many different answers as replies. For me, the pressure never abates. At any moment of the day or night, I can drop whatever I'm doing (including sleep) to do something with/about coins.

Babar, I know just how you feel. Sometimes I seem to live, breathe and think coins - but at other times, while conscious of my collection and not wanting to give it up, and still checking my change for anything of interest, I will spend little time looking through my albums and may leave new additions unsorted for weeks. Often my interest is rekindled by a foreign trip, a visit to a coin shop or a new issue I particularly like.

For me it is a lot easier to do or not with coins. I go to about 2 to 4 coin shows a Month. Some months only two so inbetween, I don't mess with coins much. But right after a show and if I purchased something, I again get interested in coins. However, by me there are so many other things to do, if I didn't mess around with coins for a while, would hardly notice. We have car shows, gun shows, knife shows, camera shows, computer shows, electronic shows and on and on and on with all kinds of shows. Then too, there are amusement parks, food fests, carnivals and just to many things to do. Parades for just about anything to the point of just to much to do. Not sure but if I just stopped collecting coins, might not even miss them.

For me, I am constantly thinking about coins. Some of my other hobbies come and go in waves but coins always seem to be in my mind

It comes and goes for me. I've always had "hobby attention deficit disorder".
Ill be obsessed with something, then not care cause something else has my attention.
I have found though, that coins is one of the few hobbies that consistently draws me back in. :)

Yeah, sometimes it is more like an obsession. Other times I just let the coins be. I don't do much with them in summer because I have too many other things I can/need to be doing. In the winter I usually make most my purchases and get a majority of my cataloging done.

I get a new hobby about every 18 months.
Before this it was puzzles (mostly rotational).
But - if I keep to cheap world coins within my means, I can probably go for longer, maybe indefinitely - I lost some interest in puzzles because the new ones are expensive!!

For me too it's in wave. but it all depend on what's going, summer I don't to much with my collection, I keep adding a little but I don't really do the sorting, filling or reorganizing stuff. Plus the past few months have been busy at work, with the 3 kids, wife works night shift so I spend as much time with them. when they're off to sleep in the pool I go with a beer and just relax, coins aren't really in my mind. I'll pick it up more after hunting season.

I have a constant low-volume hum in the back of my head that says, Coins, Coins, Coins... I'm always thinking about them in some context. If I'm able attend a coin show or auction, the volume gets turned up quite a bit for a few weeks. Irregardless, the volume is always on.

With me the wave isn't the collecting, but the collection.
By which I mean, I'm constantly on the lookout for coins to add. But the wavering bit comes when I look over my collection. Sometimes I'm all 'yeah, that's a pretty good collection!' and others I'm thinking 'why on earth did I buy that? I could have spent the money on something nicer'. I start to find fault with coins I have, wishing I had waited for better.
In fact I've just sold two rare coins (one, only the second known example) because I just don't get a kick from them any more. I'm shifting towards better condition coins rather than filling all the rarities gaps, which I was keen to do when I first started.
So now I'm better off in terms of cash, another collector is pleased as he has filled a gap ... and I'm on the lookout for more coins to buy!

like I said before, Quote: For me, all interests come in waves. Sometimes its coins as my main interest, sometimes its not. but participating in the Project 100K and the Project 25K, always keeps coins and bills on my mind

Like others have said before, my wave shifts from the different coins that I try and collect. I think I have finally settled on what type of coin and the other dansco's will move on to support my collecting of this coin.
